they claimed a lawsuit against me...but would not give information about where they were calling from or who they were. they did give the county name in which they claimed to have filed this so-called lawsuit and also provided a "case number" which I have not been able to confirm as accurate with any court in the county she claimed. the woman on the phone was named Cynthia and she said "considered yourself served"

HAHAHA ive never heard of "Service by Phone"...phishing scam???

Received several calls from unknown number.  888-226-3712 is the number they gave me for callback.  Seems to be a hardcore skiptracer debt collection company.

Called and said they were going to serve papers on me .  I say, "Have at it!" All of my old d debts are way beyond the statute of limitations in my state. Any threat to sue will be followed by a lawsuit for violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Received call from this company looking for someone else. Called them back and explained that their message was in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Hung up on me. Figured since they could harass people, it was their turn. Called them back and explained that was not only going to submit the message to The New York Attorney General, I also told them I was going to find the person they were calling about and avail them of their rights.

Called and left a message stating they have two complaints against my x-wife for some county I never lived in. Funny thing is, they ended their message with "good luck". Cracked me up. I called them back, and had to leave a message. I informed them I have nothing to do with the person they are looking for, I have no way of contacting them, I am not going to be their message boy. They will have to figure out how to find her themselves. Gave them her new last name, and wished them luck.

Received a call from a "Mr. Cummings (?)" on my phone this morning. Insisted I call him back. Did not give name of firm/person they were looking for.  I know its a scam, but I am debating to return the call, just to tell them send me something in writing.

Just got a call from a Mr. [***] asking me or my lawyer call him back because if not I'll will be having papers served to either my place of employment or my house. I will forward this to my lawyer, good thing I have one, but I believe this is a scam of some kind. Not sure what this is about. Doesn't leave a company name and he sounds like a robot.

I have received calls from this Mr. Cummings a few years back stating that I or my attorney should call back or else I would get papers served to my place of employment or my home. I never returned the calls and I have never been served any papers. I don't know what the deal is with this guy but he has called other people I know with the same thing. Because the calls have stopped I didn't take any action but I just got a call today and am going to look into what actions I can take to stop the calls. If anyone has tried anything and it worked please inform us of what you did. This man must be stopped before someone is scammed by him.

They won't send you anything in writing because it is easier to prosecute that way. I'm surprised they are leaving voice mails. The normal routine is to talk to somebody without leaving a message, and then giving you the scam message that they have a warrant and you need to purchase a green dot card, put money on the card, call them back with the card number and pin for them to "take your payment" and then it's over. I'm shocked people fall for this scam, but according the D.A. here in North Carolina, and websites I see, they clearly do. If they won't send you something in writing, and/or you know you don't owe money, then don't give out personal information or a way to give them money.

This company uses the legitimate name of DTA, which is a real mortgage consolidation company. This number 888-226-3712 however is not for the real DTA company. This is a scam as you probably guessed. When you ask what DTA  stands for, they give a fake legal service name.

The company goes by The DTA Group LLC.  They are a registered corporation by a man named Demetrius Thompson with an address of 800 BRIAR CREEK RD SUITE BB406 CHARLOTTE NC 28210.  DO NOT pay them anything.  It is fraud.  Report them immediately to the FCC for fraudulent use of telephone lines to conduct illegal activity, to the FTC for the collections violations, and the Office of the Attorney General of NC.

They won't serve you anything.  A debt collector cannot issue or serve a summons - only a court can do that.  They might rattle off some phony docket number to intimidate you, but it's all hot air.
