i got the same message. i was stupid enough to call back. it is not just a scam, it is very dangerous.
because i almost had a heart attack. the guy who said he is Andrew Hamilton and gave me his batch number and said that this is IRS and i did not pay taxes from 2008 to 2012 and will being sued for that with prison time ahead of me.
i asked why i don't have papers sent to me about this issue, and he said that they twice tried to send papers but i was not available at my house. this is when i started to suspect that this is a scam, because papers would be delivered to me in any case i am sure.

So just the other day... I come home from doing errands in the am and there's this voice mail with a seemingly computerized voice for me telling me the IRS tax audit service needs my immediate response or I could face arrest.

I see the number on my phone (888 370 9574) and I call it back. No answer after tons of rings.

I go about whatever I was doing in my kitchen and the phone rings--it's them again! This time I answer.

This guy mumbles his name and then asks if it's me and I say yes. He said, "Did you get our call?" I say, "Yes I just did and when I tried to call back no one answered so I am glad you called." He cuts me off and says, "Oh sir that's an excuse... do not try to avoid us!..."

I try to slow him down and get him to spell his name out slowly for me - John Harris. ID# 08061 Badge # 9725. But he sounds totally Hispanic. So that name doesn't quite fit but hey, who am I to judge.

Either way he was talking over me a lot and I asked him to please tell me what Department he was with exactly. He would not give that information up no matter how many times I asked him. I said, "Hey you called me and so you have all my information. I need for you to give me all of yours please!" He said, "You are not listening to me sir! You will be arrested and the sheriff's department will now be called, etc." He fires off my full name and address and then something about the sheriff's dept and all this stuff...

But at this point he is talking over me and I am talking over him. It's like a CS call gone bad but only in the first few minutes! no turning back. Finally I just tell the guy off in some four letter words and call him a scam as i slam down the phone.

Slightly heightened and concerned, I call the actual IRS itself. I finally reach someone and notify them of this sham. The agent thanks me and says, "We never call. We only write people letters to which they can would respond by tel, etc. A person may be dealing with some long standing issue but it's always that way--all with letters to which the person replies by tel. So this was a scam sir--thanks for telling us and I am sorry that happened to you, etc etc." the IRS agent goes on to say, "The IRS would not call you like that and I wish more people realized this but you seemed to have been able to avoid the scam and you are lucky." She even asks me if I want her to double check my tax information just to make sure I have no issues. I give her my info and she says, "Yup, you are fine. But I could see how if you or anyone had any past IRS issues, you might be so worried that you would have given the scammer information they wanted! But you have no IRS concerns..."

She then tells me to call the US Treasury Inspector general, which I do: 800 366 4484 to report this. She says that the IRS has gotten a couple calls about scams like this one so far.

This is a fake,  someone   [male voice with accent similar sounding to one from middle east / India / etc ]  with a very much similar message about an impending IRS audit.  This time they bothered to look up a name on Linkedin for a male that is/was working for the IRS,  and/or  fabricated the LinkedIn entry.    Gonna take a lot more than that to spoof  the IRS!

They targeted a senior who I worked with whose husband passed away awhile ago; they called her several times and scared her so she called me. Fortunately she didn't give them any information, but they called her back again and again (I told her not to answer, so she didn't anymore). Unfortunately the IRS phone number listed on the IRS website to call to report spams is not taking calls- the voice mail is full. Not great customer service there!

The number they say to call is 1-888-370-9574. DO NOT CALL THEM BACK! Report to the real IRS scam dept. I feel so bad for people who may fall for this crap!

Boy, these guys are working it.  I've had the same call several times now, with the same names and badge numbers.  Mine came from "Tony Foster" and "John Hamilton," yet they had thick Pakistani accents.  However, a friend in Ohio got the same pitch from an American named Sarah Lopez.  One good thing about paying your taxes.  I knew there was no issue, because we always report our taxes honestly and pay on time.  After all, it is the government we are turning to in order to help us catch these fraudsters.

You can make complaints with the IRS at 1.800.829.1040.  The number to call on Social Security theft is 1-800-908-4490.   Also complain to the FTC at their web site, which has an online form:  www.treasurey.gov/tigta  It's also good to contact the fraud division of your state attorney general's office.
