    No, it's a scam.  REAL process servers do not call you ahead of time.  REAL attorneys do not call you to tell you they're "filing a complaint".

    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

    Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I received a call from this number at my home number and my cell phone number. The person told my boyfriend that this company is looking for me and that I needed to call them. When I called I was told I owe a debt. I asked to who and the female on the phone told me two separate debtors. One was First California Bank and the other was Cutter Group, LLC. I asked what kind of company were these two companies and was told a pay day loan company.

    I immediately informed this person that I had not taken out a loan with any company and she immediately started repeating my social security number and my birth date. I asked for a letter and the person hung up on me. A Mr. Porter called my home and told my boyfriend that I needed to call them. However, when I called I was told that he was not in. I called home and my boyfriend told me that he had just finished talking to this Mr. Porter.

    I am immediately filing a complaint with the FTC. Isn't it illegal for someone to sell your personal information to fake bill collectors?

    Supposed law firm with "investigators" trying to contact individuals for check fraud. If you are a legit business, you would identify yourself and the company name when the phone is answered. I called back after being hung up on when I asked those questions and provide my job title in order to get the person's full attention and get the information out of them. Don't try to scam a .gov agent.

    I had worked @ a real legal collection firm. This is a bunch of crap. Sadly someone is getting taken for this scam right now. We all probably had either took out some sort of small loan over the past 10 years or co-signed for someone to get a Payday Loan. The loan was not paid or maybe was paid. The original loan company ( payday loans $255 or less) legally sold the accounts that were in default for 180 days or more. Remember computers make errors, just like people. Paid  accounts are always mixed in. The original loan company sold this debt portfolio for probably a fair cent on the dollar. After a few years its starts getting passed around. And sadly different people with not honest or legal business practices have to eat and live the kinda of lifestyle that requires them to be involved in a bunch of crap like this.

    "We all probably had either took out some sort of small loan over the past 10 years or co-signed for someone to get a Payday Loan. "  I for one have never ever taken out a payday loan, nor would I ever consider it.  I also have never co-signed for any loan in my lifetime since I know for a fact that if that person doesn't make the payments, then I am on the hook for them.  So I guess we can throw out the "we all".  I am sure there are many other people on here who would have never taken a loan of this sort out not even considered it.  It is incumbent upon any company to purge their records of paid bills before selling them.  I feel that any company that does not do that should be held financially responsible.  Perhaps that would help straighten things out, at least for the legally obligated debt, of course the criminals would still be around.

    So I guess we can throw out the "we all".  Thanks and you are correct. However the info was obtained, it feels like a complete violation. I would guess this sorta call would be disturbing for many. When I was younger back in late 80's in Los Angeles my roommate  was a telemarketing scam artist. He made 100k a year for the 2 years. Good luck my friend.  Need to take my dog for a walk :-) Gman

    Number 888-408-9651 has been calling me for 3 days straight asking for some random guy, when i said this is "name" she hung up on me. They have continued to call me from a few local numbers as well such as 615-510-3845, i can't seem to track it but its getting super annoying!You'd think after hearing my VM like 20 times and me answering they'd get the hint that this is not the person they are attempting to contact. I put them in my phone as Do not answer!
    Wouldn't trust it.
