Annoying calls from "CBU", a debt collector twice a day for a week now. When I answer my home phone, I hear a recorded message to call them at 1-888-499-5501, and then a quick hang up. I have no debt trouble.

CBE Group is a debt collector, or at least they have a web site that says that is what they are. Apparently they use a machine to call the last known number of somebody who owes money, a number that I happened to get from the phone company when we moved to our current house. They call twice a day forever. I called them back on the 888-499-5501 number and told them I didn't know the person they were after, and that I would file a harassment lawsuit if they didn't stop calling me. The guy seemed to take it seriously and promised to remove my number, but who knows if they will follow through? They have a mailing address on their website, so if they keep it up, they'll get a letter from my lawyer.

Very annoying call with an instruction to call back.  I forwarded this number to FTC because my phone has been registered on the "Do-Not-Call" list.

This annoying caller kept calling and leaving messages on my phone.  I have contacted FTC for additional complaints after briefing with its representative. There has been no purposefor this entity to disturb my strictly work number.

Freakin Debt collector called and woke us up at 8:05 am on our day off! Not even for us. They were looking for a niece who I've only met once in my life. Ridiculous!

I keep getting a call from this company, no messages are left, and when I answer nobody talks. Its supposedly a debt collector, but I have no debts on my name. It's getting annoying. I have tried calling them and I just get put on hold. I don't have time for that.

I got the same kind of thing too! It's absolutely ridiculous. They have called so many times that I eventually put the number in my contacts as Don't Answer, so I would know not to answer it.

I like all the links this poster has provided. That is why I'm bumping it up.

    888-499-5501 called and didn't leave a message.

If I don't recognize the caller, I don't pick up.

If they don't leave a message, I can erase their number after I post it here so OTHERS
    are warned.

These scamming basturds will stop at nothing. Plus, it doesn't help that the NSA is also harvesting all your calls in VIOLATION of your civil rights so why not stop them ALL from listening?

Wrap aluminum foil around your phone before you go to sleep so the signal won't get through and wake you up. If someone needs to get in touch they can leave a voice message. If it is urgent, then they should call the police or a neighbor and ask them to pound on your door. Anything else is harassment from scammers and law enforcement seems to be too crippled to do anything about it.

The FTC Do Not Call list doesn't work. At all. If it did, we wouldn't be getting these calls.

Don't waste your time signing up. I signed up and did a google search on my number and it showed my ENTIRE NAME, ETC.How the fk is THAT kosher? It isn't. The 'good guys' don't give a [***] about you. They will out you anyway. Scammers/NSA win, the rest of us get fked.

I'm ready to go off the fing grid.

    Excellent solution replies to Saren
Great suggestion. I disconnected my landline from my answering machine because I want scammers to have the phone ring and ring....

Cell phone doesn't get answered if I don't know who it is. If I'm in the mood, I'll pick up and answer
"L.A. Police Dept, how may I direct your call'?

That usually merits a hangup. If you need to trace the number that called then press *57. It automatically harvests the caller's number and forwards it to the PD. If you get called enough times, go and have them put a stop to them.

    Thank You replies to Connie
For saying that when you call this number you get a recorded message.

This tells me not to bother calling for two reasons. The first is that this number (888 prefix) has the ability to 'harvest' the number that called. This tells them to harass you THAT MUCH MORE!

DON'T CALL THEM. Put them on your contact list with a silent ringtone.

    Screw Scammers
I don't have debt. But even if I did, I would NOT deal with these fks. Put them on your contact list as '[***] Caller' with a silent/vibrate ringtone when they call. They woke me up. I could stick a knife in their eyeball for doing this to me. WHY won't the fing NSA DO SOMETHING about them?

"ANNOYING AND FRIGHTENING CALLS FROM ‘THE CBE GROUP’
    October 30, 2007

    ACCORDING TO USA TODAY (See:http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2007-05-23-irs-scrutiny_N.htm):

    At a recent Congressional hearing:

Two IRS contracting firms, down from the three initially selected, have been making collection calls to thousands of taxpayers who owe less than $25,000 in taxes and have not disputed the debt. The firms, which keep up to 24% of what they recover, have collected nearly $20 million so far, IRS data show.

Highlighting the hearing testimony and exhibits was the recorded voice of an anonymous and clearly exasperated taxpayer who repeatedly rebuffed a private collector’s efforts to verify his Social Security number.

“I have been getting harassing phone calls from your company by people who refuse to leave their last names,” the man said to an employee of The CBE Group, one of the IRS contractors. “It is incredibly annoying and frightening.”

Have you been the subject of ‘annoying’ and ‘frightening’ calls from the CBE Group?  Simple solution: HIRE A VERY GOOD ATTORNEY (PREFERABLY FROM A TOP 20 LAW SCHOOL) and SUE THE PANTS OFF THIS DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY. Also, write your congressman and FIGHT LIKE A JUNK-YARD DOG AGAINST THEM."
