Read CWG40's post on the first page of this thread.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Read BigA's comments. No legitimate process server calls you up in advance and tells you they are coming by.  Check with your state as to the correct statute of limitations.  In California it is generally 4 years on written contracts.  As to debts, the period starts when the first injury occurs to the creditor.  Say, failure to make a payment.  Or ceasing payments.    They may hold debts which are barred by the statute of limitations from enforcement but they still attempt to scare money out of people.  Don't fall for it.  Ignore and block the calls.

My mom got a call from "Coastline and Associates" and didn't give any info. They used my middle name, not my first name, and they gave a case number and told her they needed my info to serve me papers. I've been in the military for 9 years and I've paid off all my old debts and haven't accrued any new ones that are delinquent. I did let some accounts go to collections before I enlisted but I've paid them all off. Fortunately, I can just have a JAG lawyer call them and sort it out. I'll let you know how it goes.

That's the best approach, the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act puts strict limits on what debt collectors can and cannot do as to active duty service people.

They just called the place I work at and asked someone who works there when I was working next. Said that they had to serve me w/ papers and wanted to know the policy. "However" if someone could pass off the contact number to call them and the case number, I could call them to avoid the embarrassment of being served at work.

My parents got a message from CNA. and the same # for me to call.  I don't live with my parents. CNA AKA Coastline and Associates said they have papers to serve me. When I called them I was screamed at because I asked for the docket number and validation of debt.  They lost it. The lady totally lost her composure and was screaming at me about me telling them when I would be home so they could serve these papers.  Told her i was recording the conversation and she hung up.  Filing a complaint and going to sue them!!!!!!

He wanted to know who i was looking for and my name. When i did not give it to him, he got even more upset with me. Its a scam. could not find anything when i googled the telephone number.

Validate the account numbers. You have to right to request a validation letter which includes the original account number then call the original account holder. The account number will most likely be wrong Or the stair of limitations is up and they want to to be scarred and own the debt to rreopen the limitations if that happens you're stuck. Don't pay !!! Request validation!!! Send a disease letter and or call a credit lawyer!

This group uses another number to call back besides this 888 one. The messages we are getting from CNS say to call back at 800-448-4606 and the number they called me from this time was 713-538-8845. When you call them they won't give you any info and they get very angry when I ask them to verify who they are and why they are calling

I received voicemails from these people. Call a different number within 2 hours or be served papers reference number blah blah. They can’t just serve you papers you have the right to validate this debt with the original debt holder. If it’s past your States statue  they can call all they want but you don’t have to pay and they cannot sue you. When I called the so called original debtor the account number was wrong as well as being past the statue of limitations. You can wake up old debt if you agree to pay. Do your research and don’t fall for scams
