Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - CWG40 replies to Carol KinserGo back to the bank and close out your old account number and get a new one and DO NOT let anyone know you new account number. DO IT QUICKTIME!
Never give money or account numbers over the phone to anyone you do not personally know.
This is a total scam:
Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it. An abusive, screaming voice that claims you will be subjected to non-existent or basically crazy-sounding legal proceedings does not mean the person calling you is truthful or accurate.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else another dime until the debt is validated
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now. - CWG40

- Tiffany replies to Carol Kinser| 3 repliesWhat ended up happening? I got the same phone call, paid the amount due. And am getting new phone calls from a different company for the same pay day loan. Not sure what to do?
Tiff5482@yahoo.com - Amber replies to Tiffany| 2 repliesMe too I was in tears and they almost got me again. Is there anyway to get my money back since they already got me once?
- Alfalfa replies to Amber| 1 replyIf you authorized them to debit your bank account, you may be able to dispute the charge. Be sure and close your account, otherwise they will keep hitting it.
- Amber replies to AlfalfaIt was a walmart prepaid debit card because I wasn't sure about the group so I didn't give them my bank account. So is there anyway I could get it back then?
