I received this automated call yesterday & today.  It's a shame criminals can operate for this length of time without being stopped.

Got called from this number.  First thing they asked for was personal information.  It's like someone knocks on your door and says, "You don't know who I am, but could you please tell me your birth year?  Also your SSN, please."  Gimme a break.

When I called Capital One using the number on their website, I was transferred to the fraud dept., and they didn't need anything from me.  Presumably this number (888-618-8906) is bogus.

    Simple rule:
If you don't recognize the number, don't give out personal information!

My credit card was also recently compromised and I also got a call from this number saying they were Capital One and asking for personal info. I think it may be the company that was charging my credit card fradulantly. Did you recently get involved with any company offering free Acai berry samples?

This number is a valid Capital One number. It's their automated system. I double-checked by calling Capital One.

Whatever! This number is a SCAM! replies to NV
This is not Capital One.  My credit card number was stolen and I only realized this after recieving my statement which had thousands of dollars of charges on it.  You should only call Capital One using the phone number on the back of your credit card.  My card was deactivated immediately and a few days after, this number showed on my caller id.  Someone has been calling several times a day, and the first question is for you to punch in your birthdate.  Capital One already has your birthdate, so why would they ask for it?  I have reported this fraudulent number to Capital One.  Also, this fradulent number person left a very official message on my answering machine, but again, after talking with the real Capital One people, it is only a scam. Don't be fooled.

I was just re-issued a new Capital One card (due to OTHER fraudulant acts...gosh, what a sucky world we live in sometimes!).  Anyway, this number has appeared twice on my phone tonight within just an hour. I didn't answer--I came here instead. Thank God too! Now I know who is really calling--NOT Capital One. I'm pretty jaded when it comes to people asking for my personal info. In the years I've been a Capital One client, they never once lost my name, address, credit card number, etc. Why would they all of a sudden need us to repeat this information? Bottom line: This isn't Capital One, and we should never give out personal info to unknown people. If you don't have one already, you should all go get a username at capitalone.com so that you can keep a close eye on your account (and see that all of your information is already in the system).

Received a voice mail message for my wife @ 5:05 PM, asked for her by name, we were recently victims of credit card fraud, it is being investigated by Capital One's Fraud Dept. , I insisted that the old cards be cancelled and that we be issued new ones, with a new number. The representative said that we would be receiving new cards within 7/10 business days, I contacted them on 3/9/09. I was also told that all communications would be via mail, and that no one would be callng us. Hopefully I'll be home the next time they call, I'm sure it will be an interesting conversation.

Same thing with me.  Someone charged a $2k HP computer to my card and had it delivered to someone in Silver Spring, MD.  I had a new card/number reissued and I find it a little too ironic that last night I got two calls from this number and they didn't leave a message.  I'm glad I searched the number and found this forum!

I just noticed the post above mine,  I bet it's the same scammers that are vitalrez
just cancelled my card and had it replaced .
Their customer  sevice threatened to report me to internation traders to not deal with me.  (wonderful)
Just wish Vital res would go to hell.  they are the same outfit marketing chinese products by way of canada as this acai berry and colon clense and  who knows what else.
Capital one actually refunded me for the scam they pulled on me. I never accepted their terms or even their sample,  I backed out of the internet  but by that time they captured my card info for the 5.69 postage only  (so they claimed)

charged me twice in April for few cents less than 80.00 that when my card got stopped they put through a charge for colon clense.
    Absolute creeps.
trying to get my date of birth  and who knows what else?

My credit card was stolen recently, and the call seemed to be legit at first.  But, asking for birth year confirmed that it was fraudulent.  I have no idea how they got my number.  This site is a useful resource.

Automated call said they were Capital One calling about the recent fraudulent charges to my husband's credit card. We found the fraud charges on the credit card statement.  I guess it was a follow call to let us know the fraud claim was being handled and they were sending a document by mail. Just to let everyone know, some scammers charged games to my husband's business card. The pnone number is a legitimate capital one number

This number has called me three times in the last two days trying to get my personal information.  They claim to be from Capital One Fraud Prevention and the message is automated and asks me to verify my identity before i talk to a customer service representative.  After receiving the first call i called the real capital one fraud prevention number and asked them to verify the number.  They said that this number is NOT one of their numbers.

I received call from 1-888-618-8906. My card was used by someone else. Capitalone opened new account. So, looks like, this number is valid and Capital One is trying to contact you regarding fraud on card.
