- Nancy| 14 repliesI cannot tell you how many of these calls I get in which voice mails are left each day. I have been receiving them over the course of the last 18 months! They say they are filing papers with my local court, or will be delivering a summons, or will be coming to arrest me. No papers are EVER delivered to me and no one comes to my home. These are scams to get you to pay something out of fear. You cannot be arrested or charged with a crime in regard to a debt - no matter what they say!! Debts are civil matters only. A legitimate debt collector will file a proper complaint with your local court if they intend to sue you. A sheriff will hand deliver it to you, or leave an official notice on your door at home or at your work location.
No legitimate debt collector will EVER call you to notify you they will be filing papers, or will be delivering a summons. Also, should you call them back and they refuse to supply you with a mailing address for their business, they are scammers. Scammers will also refuse to send you a letter with information about the debt they are trying to collect. They do this so they can't be traced and because the debt is not real.

- Sarah replies to NancyNancy,
I got the same thing. From several different "companies". I swear there must be some kind of list of people like us who others think they can scam. Unfortunately I have been through an actual court situation because of a debt and this is not how it works.
Do not pay them!!! - debbie| 2 repliesi just received a call from a ms. london with an ext of 3013 and said if I did not call back, she will have the sheriff come. I don't know where she is from or who she is. I hope she does.

- Damon replies to Venita| 1 replyThe exact same thing just happened to me ,she called the county and spoke to them giving them all my personal information so I can hear then gave me 10 mins to call her back with my debit card information. These payday loans I took out 2012 are a nightmare I paid them back the calls wont stop.
- Damon replies to Belinda smith| 1 replyThey just called me told me the same thing.
They are so believable yet it smells fishy big time. - Dee| 1 replySame thing here... Said she was calling to speak directly to my employer to verify where to have me served.. Good luck.. Scare tactics don't work with me... And if it was legit It would be reported on my credit and it is not. Don't fall for it! She did not even leave her name.. Only left a number and reference #. Said it is a mandatory court appearance. Pretty sure if that were true they would have my address... Fishy Fishy

- Alfalfa replies to DeeHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

- JR| 5 repliesI got a call from this company concerning a payday loan from Classical Group LLC which is suppose to be an internet payday loan company. The lady that called me was Amber Winfield from 205-379-8841. This customer service person was very rude and got extremely nasty with me. She stated this loan was taken out in 2011. I asked if she could send me paperwork and I was told no and that I had a court date but could not tell me where I was suppose to go. After giving her my debit card information I realized they had to ask me for my mailing address to send me papers. I was told if I didn't pay the agreed amount I would be responsible for paying almost 4000.00. She could not even tell me the amount of this suppose to be original loan just told me it had to be between $250-$500 dollars. I called today asking for papers and she (Ms. Winfield) got extremely upset and hung up. If you get a call from this number 1-888-679-4309 ext.3023 please tell them you've reported them to the BBB. - JanaYes, just received the same thing, its absolutly anoying I hate it the call constantly. also said i had a mandatory summons and to call her immediately. really? I have already been to a lawyer about these calls and he said if its not on your credit report or if they have not sent correspondance thru the mail than its a scam. and i also got a letter from a company that said they were sued by the government for allowing personal info to be released and there are many potential scams out there just waiting for the right person to give in.

- berta replies to JRI got the same call and she said her name was Hattrich Ext 3014, then she asked had sheriff been to my house to serve papers yet, and want to know what my position was on my job. I have had men and woman call my job for the last three years and tell me sheriff is coming to my house to either serve papers or arrest me. I have not responded to no calls, this is silly because I am in a form of law enforcement and if that was true, I would have been served. Claiming I took a loan out on line money deposit in my bank, which I know is a lie, about 2010 they got hold of my account information and was drafting money out of my account. I went to bank and reported a fraud claim and close my account. This is a scam, a illegal act. If they could do this they would have been got in touch with me tell me what is was about, but only giving out half information.
Scam people please do not respond to these calls. - Anastasia gauthierReceived a call from 2676034086 that stated that they received a case against me on Friday march 6 and that they need we some information from me to verify some stuff. They will be submitting the claim against me on march 13. Then told me to call 8886794409 with exstention 3019. I looked up the number and found this discussion. I don't believe its a real debt collector but I'm not sure
