The message they left is below. When I called back, and said I was on the do not call list, and asked for the company name and location, I was told the name was Dealer Processing, and the location was Detroit. When I asked for the street address, they hung up on me. I continued to call back several times, and each time they hang up on me, before I could say anything. If this was legit, they would not keep hanging up on me.
Message: This is Joshua calling from dealer processing regarding a message from a couple of weeks back. The factory warranty on your vehicle expired, but I just got confirmation. We can extend it, give me a call back and we can reinstate the coverage. The way you're not stuck with an expensive repair bill, our phone number toll free 888-721-2698. Again, that's 888-721-2698. I'm here until 5 PM. Pacific time. You can ask for me, Joshua was unavailable, anyone in my office will be happy to.

That is because you were calling an 888 "toll-free" number.  They knew your number and the name associated with it before they even answered.  This is true for all 8## "toll-free" numbers.  Having Caller-ID blocking set on your line or using *67 before dialing the number does not help, they still get to see your information.

The only thing that the Do Not Call list works with is legitimate telemarketers.  The people who called you are anything but legitimate, as they are trying to scam you.  This scam has been going on for several months and there are several variations on the recorded message and call back number (if there is one, often it is a "Press 1 to talk to someone, press 2 to be removed from our list" set of options).

It is generally best not to call them back or press any prompted keys.  Block the number, report it to the FTC (especially if they give a call back number; those can be traced to someone involved with the scam) and otherwise ignore them.

There is nothing wrong with my current car warranty and I told him so. I also told him to get a real job and stop scamming people for a living. He started to curse at me and I hung up.
