Called from an unknown number and left number 888-732-0242 to call back . Claims to be from Brookstone and associates, or Brook, Stone and Associates and needs my attorney information or a legal decision will be made without my knowledge. Googled the name of the company and came up with no information listed under that name. Sounds pretty fishy as any legal matter would need to be sent in writing first.

My wife got a call from an unknown number that also said to call them back at 888-732-0242. When I contacted them, they claimed to be an attorney's office on a final attempt to collect on an unpaid debt before it becomes a civil suit. My wife did have a debt that wasn't paid on the dates they stated, for the amount they stated, with the company they stated. They knew my wife's social and her name. They had her current telephone number and our current address. If this is a scam, I'm impressed.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

How did you find out it was a scam?

Called today from blocked number and when answered told me that they were wanting to verify if the person was home to serve a summons to court. Who actually calls and warns you that they are coming? Sorry, did collections for years and the only people who do this are scammers who buy paid off debt for pennies on the dollar figuring that you are going to get scared . They then figure you'll pay them just to make it go away. No one has gotten NOTHING in writing or certified from anyone so, not scared. If they are legit then they will follow the law and collect legally, not scam someone into paying them because of something they say is owed. Claimed to be Brookstone Disputes, Berkstone Disputes  or something to that effect. Also claim that is last contact call they will make and end with a sarcastic "good luck".. SO NOT LEGAL!

My elderly mother received a call from this number stating they had a summons and are "Brookstone Dispute Resolutions."  As with other people who posted, I couldn't find anything about this company on the internet, but plan on pursuing this as best I can.  They wanted her SS#, of course.  I called them, the woman got snarky and wouldn't let me talk.  She ultimately hung up on me.  I called back and finally got an address and fax number from her.  I'll have to wait until Monday to track down the fax number (will fax from my own law office), but the address turns out to be a UPS store in Williamsville, NY.  The fax number is from that area, but not for the UPS store.  I reported to the Texas Attorney General, the Federal Trade Commission, and the local county Sheriff's office.

Of course it's a scam. These scammers can get your information through numerous sources..
Even if they do not get you to fall for it they will mark down any confirmation of said info and any additional information you may have given them during the phone call. They will bundle it up along with other poor soul's information and sell it to the next slimeball firm. And the cycle continues.
The key is, don't give them any information nor should you answer any of their questions. YOU ask the questions. They called YOU!

Yeah, I felt pretty dumb falling for it. Once I realized it, I shut my card off immediately and contacted my credit union to inform them of any charges that might come from a strange company for the amount they said they would withdraw.

JH, many fall for it. Don't feel stupid for falling for it. Feel thankful you decided to educate yourself regardless of what recently happened. This site has been a Godsend for me and many others. I fell for the scare tactics and threats. No I never went so far as to give card info, but if I didn't find this site, read the reports, read the facts posted by veteran members of the site I may have gone that far.  Don't let their scare tactics stress you out either.  Glad you're getting educated!

I received a voicemail from brookstone associates stating that they are calling in reference to a collection. She stated her name was Amber Scott, requested that I need to contact them or my attorney concerning a collection which I do not have. I did go online approximately 11/24/14 and requested a cash advance for $200.00 dollars, the next day it was deposited into my account. It was deducted from my account on 01/05/15 in the amount of $252.39 which I do have this statement on my account where they did indeed deduct it from my account. I have not returned the call due to the fact I have heard about all the scams they have for cashnetUSA/ also they are called payday advance. I am not sure weather I should call them back or disregard  it. She said that if i did not contact her there would be no further calls they would take further  actions. Since I  did this online and they have my bank account info. I am thinking they could go into my account and take out more money. What are your thoughts. I am on a fixed income and if they were to take out more money it would financially  place me in a bind. Can someone please respond as to what I need to do. I have never had this happen to me before.

I also received a call from an unknown # at my job.  Which I received a call from the same company 2 years ago on my cell with the same crap wanted my attorneys name # etc.  IT IS FRAUD.   I went through hoops with these people 2 years ago.  Where they threaten to come to my home.  IT IS A SCAM to get your money.   They buy your information from a company that is why they have it all.   Then they call you and try to scare you.   Call the Mesa, AZ fraud hotline at 480-644-2345.   It will be the first thing on the list of fraud going around.

I called them to say they were fraud, and they hung up on me.

Go to your banking institution, informed them you got a loan, it was paid back, but that this company is trying to collect again. They(your bank) can put a stop pay yo that company or you can request a different account number, it can be done & those people we I'll no longer have access to your account, also file a complaint with the FBI & attorney general office of your local state.
