Very Wary of things like these - gfFrom 900070001725, same text, same 888 number. Calling the # ends up at an automated system claiming to be Verizon's financial department, asking for your 5-digit billing zip code. Did not go any farther -- it's identical to a scam system I ran into a couple months ago, and my bills are all paid up.

- PHXI called Verizon customer service @ *611 immediately after receiving the text. I talked to a CSR and she confirmed it is a good number belonging to their financial services department. It took a couple of minutes to check, but the CSR was able to confirm it. I will still be leary of these texts in the future, but apparently this is a llegit Verizon text.

haha nfw first thing i did was google the number and I ended up here and a few other sites complaining of the same thing. - SepharoJust got the same message as M.
No way am I calling this unless I get something legit in the snail mail. - Dave| 1 replyI went through the zip code and SSN, and both had to match. Surprisingly, they had my credit card on file as well as the exact right about of my bill also.
It seems perfectly legit to me, especially since my account is showing a payment by the on-file credit card at www.verizonwireless.com as of today. I can see people being sketched out by it, but since they had my credit card info already it seemed like a pointless scam.- Caller: Verizon

- A replies to DaveOr maybe ya'll are running the scam... seems like this is a smart place to post comments telling people it's legit since it's the first site that comes in when you look it up in google...
- AMI just got this message too. Anytime I have forgotten to pay a bill they just turn the ability to call out off. When I try to make a call it will go directly to them. I have never had this message before. I didn't call the number back, as it seemed really fishy to me. I just googled it and it seems a lot of people are weirded out by it, too.

- David D.I got the same text message and called, but I wasn't going to give out the last 4 digits of my social, so I hung up and googled the number, got this page, and called *611 to reach Verizon.
Verizon's 611 operator told me that the call was legitimate. However, I know that there's no reason why any of you should believe me, and you shouldn't believe me.
So, just go ahead and call *611 yourself, and don't call 888-821-0284 at all.
The people at *611 can explain and handle your billing problem for you, and they're probably more pleasant to talk to than the people who work in collections, anyway.- Caller: Verizon Wireless (confirmed)

- DennisCalled up, and was hesitant when they asked for the last four. Called verizon's *611 and they say my account was fine. I noticed that the voice prompts were similar, but slightly different. There are two options.

I had just made a late payment, and this "dept" might not have had the updated record. Sometimes the "dept" is outsourced.

Phishing. I'm leaning towards this end.
I'm very bad with my payments and I will assure you, Verizon CALLS, they don't text. When you get shut off, your phone will take you right to their billing department. (They also get you back up in a half hour when you pay)
Verizon told me: We do not text you, we call you. Whenever that happens, just hit the *611. If there's a problem, they will help you with it. Better safe than sorry.- Caller: possibly fake

- BarthIt is Verizon's billing department. After calling the number and paying my late bill, my service was restored and the payment showed up on the website. They do send out text messages, as do all wireless companies.
I suppose I should have been more careful, but since they already had my card info on file it's not like they got anything new about me. Hate to break it to you all, but social security numbers are public info, you can get anyone's anytime you want. This is why you shouldn't use them as your IDs with companies like this if you're worried about someone paying your bill for you.
Personally, if someone is phishing for my last 4 digits and billing zip code so they can pay my bills for me, they are welcome to them. :)- Caller: Verizon Wireless

I am unsure why Verizon hasn't done anything to fight this with its customers posting about it since at least one year ago here and earlier on some other boards.... - Don replies to Feraasgot the same thing iam also paid up on my bill. deleting checked my account online shows me payed up and payment accepted and everything
