The type of dogs you own are a legitimate question on your home owners policy. The policy provides liability, in case your dog bites some one else and they sue you for negligence. Many breeds of dogs have a proclivity or pattern of biting. Sometimes with out provocation. If you have a Pit Bull  or you have a little pouffy dog, either one may have a tendancy to bite some one. That is why they insurance company asks that question. Additionally if you have a gun and are stupid enough to use it, you also may have a greater risk due to a personal lawsuit for injuries you inflict with the gun. The liability insurance part of your policy will protect you up to the liability limits if  you are found negligent (OR GUILTY) in a court of law.

An agent from your insurance company may ask you to update the insurance to value, or send you a renewaldeclarations page and show you what information they are basing the premium on. If you don't read the page to see if it is different they assume that you looked at it and agree with it. If they are sending you survey and you don't respond then they may have the 3rd party Marcshall Swift contact you. Marshall Swift is a company that has 75 years of experience in calculating reconstruction costs. Many insureers including USAA depend on their updates which they do quarterly to be sure that they price the reconstruction cost in the event of a total loss. They actually check prices in over 3000 zip codes. They are considered experts in this field. People who write the garbage I have seen on these sites are ignorant of how insurance companies work and how they work to benefit their customers. USAA doesn't ramdomly pick a number out of a hat, to insure your home. It is based on factual information that you are required by contract to provide; up to and including any renovations that you make; so the rate of premium is accurate to replace your home. Manpower wise any insurer would be hard pressed to call each individual and ask the insurance to value questions. Third parties who have nothing to gain are used so there is no misconception that there is any thing to gain by it. USAA in particular wants to have the actual dollars to replace your home in reserve, incase of a total loss. They aren't out to jack the ptrices for profit. How many other insurers return the money that they have allocated for CAT losses by giving you a rebate in the form of the Subsceiber account every December? USAA gave back 500 Million dollars at the end of 2009. If you note the weather related losses, they had planned for up to 15 hurricanes and they didn't happen. I never got a refund from my previous insurer. I wouldn't change companies for any amount of money. I trust USAA and I am glad they have my Financial Security in mind when making their non- commissioned reccomendations. USAA ROCKS!

No, it is not ridiculous to say "beware."  If you were a professional company making a legitimate business call, you would leave a message.

Then maybe USAA should explain the process upfront in a mailing or email.

Attorney General Charles Foti filed a lawsuit against USAA & Swift and 5 other insurance companies for collusion, price-fixing and anti-trust violations. Swift manufactures their claims processing software.  Go to  www.claims-portal.com the article states the Attorney General stated "By using claims processing software manufactured by Marshall & Swift/Boeckh and Xactware, the industry has been able to standardize its tactics for low-balling claims, and create a "tainted" database of claims settlements figures which the industry uses to further depress estimates for what people need to repair their homes, according to the lawsuit.. Meanwhile, all of this data is centralized by Xactware's parent company, Insurance Services Office, better known as ISO, allowing companies to collude."

In the fine print, USAA does not require answering Swift's calls. However, when Swift calls insureds every day in an attempt for you to believe returning their call is required and deadline or USAA will drop them - this is wrong.
