So, you are dishing out information and calling people bad names. Typical, what happens when you lose your job and can't pay your bills, and believe me in this economy it can happen just as quick as anything. Not all people don't pay their bills because they are lying or stealing. Some people have ACTUAL, REAL financial problems. Some people through NO fault of their own fall on hard times. How DARE you call those people liers, cheaters, or thiefs. I truely hope for your sake you never go through what some people go through in life (Example: disability, severe illness, lose of job ect.) because if you did you might just end up as one of the scum bags (as you put it) who can NO longer afford to pay your debts. Then we will see how you feel about those words being tossed around so easily.

The non human that called me is trying to track my mom down, she calls my cell 3 time a week… that being said at christmas time, my mom has COPD and took a turn, she was in a comma for a month and we called in the priest for her last rights as we took her off life-support … you will never guess who called the the nursing staff at ward in the hospital trying to contact my mom and was harassing the nursing staff.
From what I can remember it was for a car that she was leasing before she got sick,. THe car was returned after 3 yrs a payments and they received the car. Now I assume they want the money when Mazda got the car… there something wrong in this world when business rip off the world daily and get away with it.

    Get rid of the phone.
They can't call if you terf the phone.

I like my iphone that is registered to.... NOBODY. My Bill comes to a post office box registered to Casper De LaGrote, a name I made up about 5 years ago.
I pay it by e-payment via Paypal. It is cheaper than a land line and free WiFi to do this when I go for a $1.30 coffee on Friday.

Screw the harrassing beotches. I also no longer get calls from Duct Cleaners, Clothing collection agencies, Call honking a horn telling me a won a cruise, or the political BS calls!

    Financial Literacy
My two cents ... Please no attacks!

I spent my life helping others; lending money never returned, providing advise not taken.  I worked in insurance and financial services when I was perm. injured in a car accident. Masking chronic pain, bad lawyer, highly leveraged and living in debt, with children and major responsibilities and the makings of a marriage turning sour under the pressure.

We as a society are not taught, how to manage finances.  Most think it is easy or should be common sense.  We are encouraged by every media to be in debt to keep the economy churning.  Yes, there are people who can and do not pay, but their is a population of people who try and can not get from under.

I was lucky and am in the midst of finding my way out from under.  I have tried my best , as embarrassing and vulnerable it has made me feel to 'expose' myself and put myself at the mercy and scrutiny of those governed with the job to collect.  They too have 'good' caring and understanding people who 'get it', and those who are down right rude and refuse to appreciate that hard times [illness, injury and death] are non-discriminating.

Now, I am off to teach financial literacy to a bunch of 7/8 graders, to help eliminate their potential future hardships or understand what is going on in their families.

Best wishes to you all ... for those legit there can be light at the end of the tunnel - find someone your trust to help you through ... maybe that someone is you.

    Good Luck!

So, I guess I am now getting the Royal Treatment from CCL.  Their aim with me was to force me to get a loan with them or they would ruin me despite my cooperation to pay out of the proceeds of an upcoming sale.  They stressed me out, lied about all communication I had with them.  I called my lawyer and had them negotiate with them - as the stressful calls while at work and untrue stories were unconscienable.  They confirmed a date with me w/i 10 days for payment, but if I did not agree to be financed by their broker they would force legal action within 2 days.  WTF?!

Once out of this situation, I will never take the offerings of any credit card.  Prepaid is the way for me for life.

Your input is very disturbing, most of all debt collectors harass and use scare tactics. You claim that people hide and write bad cheques. Fact is there are the scum bags out there that are knowing committing: however, your statements are very disturbing placing everyone in collection as a scum bag. Oppps I forgot you were a debt collector, enough said...

Been there replies to Well Informed
The person is in fact correct because I have had to go that route. I had a collection company calling me at home multiple times daily and then started calling me at work. The threatened to tell my manager and have me fired because I worked at a bank at the time. I went to my manager scared in tears and he advised me to get legal advice and send a letter or fax requesting they no longer contact me by phone and to request all communication in writing.

If you send this request they legally have to stop calling and follow up by mail only. That being said, that will no stop them from sending letters, continuing to report against your credit and attempt to take legal action. i.e. sue to garnish your wages.

You can find more details online about how they are regulated with there collection process. There are laws in Ontario that they cannot pursue legal action to collect the debt three years after your last payment or default. They can however continue to try to contact you and continue to report on it and ruin your credit rating. There are laws regulating how many times a day, how many times a week, what times of the day etc. they can call. You can take legal action or report a claim against them for harassment if they breach the regulations or don't abide by your letter requesting no calls. Debt collectors do get very nasty, threatening and will outright lie to you hoping to intimidate you and take advantage of your ignorance.

I am not saying I don't pay my debt, or that people should get away with not paying debt. I was under financial hardship, lost my job, my house, had to move to find another job and couldn't afford to drive for years. I'm still trying to get back to where I was and pay off all my debts but having someone threaten my employment does not make me pay back more money then I have. It makes my situation worse and ruins any good intentions to try to pay off debt.

Word to the wise - don't bother with the settlements either. I did this before. One company only allowed the agreement by pre-authorized payment and then took more money then agreed. They changed the amount and dates so Stop Payments at the bank wouldn't work. They left me with more financial hardship by withdrawing my rent and grocery money. I had to close the account to have them stop. Another agreed for a one time lump sum of 50% of the debt. After paid they kept harassing me for the difference, they report the settlement on your credit which also lowers your rating, and continued to report the difference I owed that we agreed would be settled.

My advice, plan to pay it. Work with a lawyer or a settlement company if your dealing with collections as they will go out of there way to screw you even if your making payments. If you can make monthly payments, make them directly to the credit card through your banking. Even an inactive credit card will take the payment. I did this with a TD Bank card until it was paid. The company that owned the debt (and threatened to have me fired) never saw a dime from me. They bought debt they couldn't collect because it was paid. They couldn't report on it because it was paid.

CCL has the last of my debt and they will not see a dime. The bank will. The agent was such a ass on the phone and actually yelled at me. I don't have debt because I want to, and yelling at me in certainly not going to make money appear that I don't have.

Pay the people you owe directly as best you can until it's all paid up. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

No actually you are not allowed to call neighbors or relatives to leave messages or try to get info. This is not allowed under the consumer protection act or the privacy act. Debt collectors do it anyways because many people are not educated on what they can or cannot do. Your collection company was having you break laws and many collectors act like scum bags too. There is wrong on both sides and I'm sure people do try to get out of it. Most people get in over there heads and/or get laid off or loose a family member and end up in a bad situation. I got laid off only 6 months after buying a new house, and 1 year after buying a used car. I could afford by debt until I didn't have work and couldn't get work. I had no choice but to default on my credit cards so I could save my house and feed my kids. I'm now working to pay them off. I had to move and go back to school to get a decent job. I am only now 5 years later able to start paying everything off. Every debt collector that called wasted there time looking for money I didn't have. Most people don't want to default on credit. Most people want to pay it off. Most people want to restore there credit. Assuming everyone is a scumbag is very ignorant.
