I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes. Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks or Itunes cards or similar for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Everyone please note:
Effective in April of 2017, the IRS will start using private debt collectors who may, in fact contact you. Note the IRS will notify you by mail that your account is being turned over to a private group. The private collector will then send you another letter. They may call you after that point.

- ValReceived several calls today. Robo-voice telling me that the IRS has tried to contact me over 6 months with and has not been able to contact me. I knew it was a scam! To humor myself, I called back. A man answered, “IRS serrvices.” It was obviously a call center since I could hear lots of noise in the background. I told the man that answered that I was returning a call about a lawsuit. He asked for my name and I gave him a fake one. Without confirming that I was actually the name I gave him, he told me I owed $9245.36 and asked me if I would like to pay the entire balance with my credit card. I know to be careful to say “yes” because they can record that and use the yes to confirm for other scams, so I just said, “I’m sorry, but you are a scam. The IRS does not have a lawsuit against me, and you are full of it.” He then called me a m— f— and started lobbing other profanities at me. I hung up. Do NOT pay them anything! It is a scam! Anyone who calls claiming to be the IRS is a scammer.

- Paul| 1 replyOK- I have been posting this about all these calls. If you do the following, you can reduce these calls considerably, and eventually they'll consider your number to be inactive.
First and foremost NEVER-EVER answer the call if you don't recognize the number. When you answer it just verifies your number is active and it will be sold to others who will also call.
Secondly DO NOT EVER fall for their ploy of being added to their “do not call list” because- once again- it only verifies your number is active and it will be sold, thereby increasing the calls.
This is what I did and it is VERY effective:
1) Check to see if your phone service offers “Selective Call Forwarding”. On my phone you dial *63. This service allows you to forward calls that you designate to any other number anywhere.
2) Compile a list of the annoying numbers and designate any one of the annoying numbers as the number to forward the calls to.
3) If you do this correctly, the moron calls will then be automatically forwarded to another moron. Your phone won't even ring! You can even forward them to a company that's out of business or even your worst enemy.
As time goes on, you may have to review the numbers and add or delete new numbers. I did this for about 6 months and have reduced my moron calls from several a day to one or two a week. Eventually they will think your number is inactive and will drop you from their lists. The good news? NO ONE can get around this like they can with the government’s impotent “do not call list”. If this works for you, please feel free to pass it along and together we can all keep the morons guessing.
