Have gotten 2 calls from this number today, spaced about 4 hours apart.  I didn't recognize the number, so I didn't pick up.  However, a friend I work with has also gotten a bunch of calls from some company claiming to be a payday lender that she owes money to (she doesn't), and claiming they were going to have her arrested, etc.  I helped her get rid of them.

IF YOU DON'T OWE MONEY TO ANY PAYDAY LENDER, DON'T LET THESE PEOPLE FRIGHTEN YOU INTO PAYING SOMETHING YOU DON'T OWE WITH THEIR THREATS.  It is common practice for them to buy a phone number list and just start calling random people, and make the following threats:
*you owe an outrageous sum for a payday loan you took out 2 months (or 6 months or a year, etc) ago
*you will be arrested if you don't pay
*they are "downloading you" or "downloading affadavits for your arrest"
*they are sending the police to your workplace at 2 pm (or 1800 hours or 3 pm, etc) to arrest you
*they are going to call your supervisor at your workplace

DON'T LET THEM SCARE YOU.  If they demand you pay, turn right around and demand that they show proof that you owe them money.  Ask them for the following, and it will stop them cold:
*ask for the name of the payday lender, address, phone number, and your account number
*ask them to confirm your bank account information (they won't be able to - and if for some reason they have that info, you need to close your bank account immediately)
*ask them for a copy of the contract you signed to take out the loan (any LEGAL payday lender will have this - if they say it was done online and there's no contract, tell them NO DEAL)
*when they threaten to have you arrested, take you to court, etc - call their bluff.  If you don't owe a payday loan, they will have a hard time taking you to court over it.  And you cannot be arrested for defaulting on a loan - we don't have debtor's prisons anymore!

I hope this helps someone else deal with these scumbags.

I receive a call from this number daily.  They don't leave a message and, luckily, they don't leave a message.  Reading the other's posts, I know that these are not legit calls and I have gotten them from other telephone #s.  Glad I don't have to worry about this one and can add it to the phone #s I can block (thanks AT&T)

even IF you owe money to a payday lender, they typically "sell" your debt to these whackjob collections agencies that try and get money out of you by threatening you, ie : having you arrested, hauling you into court, etc. What people need to know is, even if the debt is valid, these agencies CANNOT harrass you to get money out of you. It is illegal. There is a Fair Debt Law that they must abide by and many of these agencies do not adhere to the law. They will do whatever it takes to try and get money out of you, and sometimes "settle" the claim for an enormous fee on top of what you owe (this is also illegal). Tell them you are aware of the Fair Debt Law, and tell them you will be contacting a Fair Debt attorney, and the calls will stop.

Try googling Steven Berman....See if any of your calls might be from him, total scam artist, and the whole thing about downloading you...that was words he used too, and said he had put a block on my social security number....that I owed $5084, but he would settle for $940 if I wrote a letter of apology...I totally believed he was legit, made one payment, then I googled him and there are so many people who got the same exact calls and emails from him, same dollar amount...I got my money back....his answer was that his email had been hacked for several months...and that if i told my bank I would get my money back, which I did, but I am so sure.that he didn't do anything about being hacked for several months?  Stupid man. Now i don't trust anyone. And I have been told tha a lot of these people don't actually own the debt, so if they do collect they aren't sending it along to the creditor. We have to make them supply proof they own the debt.

    Folks, be aware:
1.even if you DO owe money, it is a civil, not a criminal issue, and no police/sheriff/FBI agent or secret service member will arrest you.  This is the typical scam threat.
2.,  No one can "block" a social security number.  Another scammer threat.
    3.  There is a statute of limitations on debt.  Go to http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/statuteLimitations.shtml  and check out your state.
    4.  Even if you DO owe money, there are laws about how they can collect it.  Consult with a consumer attorney; most will give you a free consult, and if it's this same loser you listed, they can sue HIM if he's doing things illegally.
Bottom feeders like this rely on people being scared and giving them something because they aren't aware of their rights, even if they DO owe money.
And it would appear that you don't so get him for harassment and violations of the Federal Debt Collection Laws as well.

This number called at 8:22 AM this morning, I didn't answer it however. Well, if they call back and get smart, that's at least one violation of the Collections Act that I'll verbally bitchslap them in the face with. Then I'll threaten to sue. I don't owe this company any money.

I had a similiar experience.  He calls threatening to send me jail and I actually called our DA and reported the call.  After I told him that, he didn't call for six months. But the calls have started up again, I just do not answer.
