    S, who is not Pat!
I just received a call from "CMA" saying I needed to call them back before 10 am tomorrow or there would be no need of doing so.  After reading all these posts, (and posted alternate numbers), I realized they've been calling me for awhile in search of the the guy who previously owned the cell number I've had for the past 5 years!  I was going to call them back and let them know their mistake, but now I'm scared to do so.  I don't think they'll believe me.  What steps need to be taken to stop this?

A female who gave her name and Jeanie called and asked for Andrea B. When questioned, she stated that my name had been used as a reference. She provided me with the name, telephone number and file number and stated that Andrea was a defendant in a legal matter and to have her to call her.

I received a call from Mr. Laughlin today about a debt from the company HSBC, from 07/2007.  He told me the amount was an amount that I myself had never accrued.  When I began asking his name again, he would reply "I already told you that". I demanded my account information, and he again replied he had already told me that. He became rather rude and beligerant, and I handed the phone to my fiance, who is a police officer (much more level headed than I), and while on the phone with him, this 'Mr. Laughlin' told my fiance he needed to calm me down.  My fiance repeatedly asked for the name of the company, and they did not say the name. I came back on the phone, exhanged some words, where he began calling me a deadbeat mom because I pay (and am current on, mind you) child support. I hung up the telephone.
We looked the company up and saw a ton of complaints. I called back, and demanded their address, since most, if not ALL places accept mail as a method of payment. They refused to give me their address because there are 'crazy people like you out there'. They said "With the way the mail system is, they don't bother with it".  What way, exactly, is the mail system like???
We hung up, and we went to the police station to file a report.
I finally thought...I should call the company where all of this started, HSBC. I spoke with their recovery department, who told me they sold it to another company. That company sold it to another. That company sold it to another. I get to this company, and they show the debt had been paid (I have proof), and apologized for it being sent anywhere else. They informed me they would call the company they sold it to to pass on 'the good news', and that if I wanted, I could call that company and inform them of what company I spoke with verifying this account had been paid.
When I called Coast Litigations back to inform them of this, the gentleman became extremely rude, demanding I not tell him how to do his job, and good luck proving to them that it had been paid.
This place is nothing but a joke, and I have no idea how they get money off of anyone.

If I were you, the first thing to do is to call the ORIGINAL company in which your debt was owed. They can direct you to where they sold your account. If they sold it, it follows a chain of where your debt was sold to and when for what account. Make double, and triple sure you do not owe on the debt Coast Litigation is trying to get you for.

They tried intimidating me by using terms such as 'lawyers, subpoenas, courts, fees" etc....they are all intimidation. I live in Kansas, and they are all the way in CALIFORNIA for goodness sake! They cannot even be the ones to send out the court papers from their office. An attorney or local sheriff's dept have to bring them to you.

Do your homework, it's worth it! This place, these people are crazy! Good luck to anyone finding this website for the same reason I did. :)

I am furious. They will not stop calling. They call my home, cell and work phone numbers. I am on the national "do not call" registry but I called the number again to re-apply. 1-888-382-1222. My phone company said they are scam artists. I have also filed a complaint with the FTC. I called these idiots back and told them not to call ever again, that they have been reported. The snotty girl's reply was, "Oh, I'm so scared...boo hoo, wah wah" then she hung up on me. Unbelievable.
THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION. THEY WILL TRY CALLING AGAIN FROM A DIFFERENT NUMBER. REPEAT, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION. THIS IS A SCAM.

got a call from 949-812-4684 today.  The man threated to have my husband served with papers for a past debt that is over 5 years old.  He gave me an hour to come up with 500.00 down and said I would need to pay 100.00 for the next two months and pay it off when I got my tax refund.  The amount he said we owed was way above the original debt amount.

This man is a con artist. Im a disabled woman never had a job but yet he says i had a credit card. My local police station said hes a scam. If you owe a debt they cant email you for one. Plus if you owe a credit card they just right it off as unpaid and it goes towards your credit. They dont take you to court for any type of debt it just goes on your credit report.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
