Basically, I returned Ryan DeFreitas' phone call and asked if there was any cost to this, and he hemmed and hawed, and when I just cut him off and asked "What is my cost?" he immediately ended the conversation with a brusque "Obviously this partnership won't work out."

Indeed. It seems they are a video production company and they charge for it. No big deal- they should tell us upfront, and not act like they are mainstream media (CNN, ABC, etc...)
