Called today at 9:58AM with no one on the line. As mentioned above, it is most probably someone phishing for Fax numbers. These people find active Fax numbers and then sell them to others.

I did some snooping and found that the number being used is set up to spoof a real number. The application it's part of is even more malicious that just Fax phishing. It's a program that is set-up to auto-dial a large amount of numbers looking for modems or gateways into computer systems. It's used by hackers to find certain systems that they can easily access.

The program is called gcdiag.c and can be found on koders.com

Received a call from 973-993-3000.  When I answer there is no one on the other line. Hope adding my incident to the list is helpful in getting the authorities to stop this.

I'm in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  The caller let it ring once and then apparently hung up.  I didn't attempt to answer the call.  Telemarketing and outbound survey companies are out of control.

I just received a called from these people. Stupid me, I took the call, but heard nothing. If this is the begining of a long list of unwanted phone calls, it will be a nightmare! I had this problem before with "Capital One". It lasted a long time, and they were calling 2-3 times a day. Before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m., even on Sundays!

We receive a daily call with immediate hang-up.  I finally used *69 feature to see who keeps calling.  The number was (973)993-3000.  This is apparently a widespread problem.  The area code is from Newark New Jersey,  per the Telus long distance book.

    Intel Insider
As one who normally doesn't answer unknown phone calls, I picked this one up  despite not recognizing the area code and number because "Intel" was listed as the caller and I'm an Intel employee at home this afternoon.  As with other folks listed in previous threads, the call dropped as soon as I answered on my end.  I'm hoping that this won't lead to the multiple calls through out the day that people have complained about.

I Google'd the number to find this thread and to would like also clicked on the .pdf link in another post below.  I have no doubt this is a case of spoofing and I find it very clever that the person's responsible for this are using a number found in the bottom of a obscure report on telecommunications.  What I would like to add to the commentary that is that I receive multiple calls from fellow employees in other locations around the world and calls originating from within Intel (including faxes) are always identified on caller id as being from "INTEL CORP" and not just plain "INTEL.

If I can find out the proper channels, I will also be forwarding this complaint internally to see if the if there is some way they can help fight back against a system that is spoofing us.  Wish me luck!

I'm in 250 area code and have started receiving calls from this number. I never pick up unless I recognize the number, so hopefully that will be the end of that.

I'm in Newfoundland, Canada.  I got a call from this number this morning at 9am.  I didn't bother answering, and when I checked the caller ID afterwards, it listed this phone number with "Unknown Name" as the caller.  A quick Google search came up with Intel in New Jersey as the source of the call.  It seemed a little fishy to me, very unlike Intel (I have a very close friend that works at Intel in Oregon), and lo and behold, this is what I find.  Pretty clever for a telemarketing or phishing scheme, hijacking a number like that, definitely makes it less obvious than using the usual 1-800 number.  Wonder if the number will call back??

I got another call today from this number! They have been calling my house at around 8 am every day for a couple of weeks! I was reading the other posts and I was wondering if they are getting into my computer? It is run through my phone lines but it is not dial up. Who can I report this too? I called the sheriff about it and was told they could not do anything about it becasue they could not get through on the line the number calls from! Talk about annoying they will not do their job!
