Harassing calls from a debt collector? Here is what you need to know
Debt collectors are highly motivated to convince debtors to pay the debt because they work on a commission. This business model has created the reputation for bill collection agencies that we know today. The collector might engage in threatening behavior and harassment. However, like any other business they are governed by laws that prohibit certain abusive practices.

- Fight4YourRights replies to tellme| 5 repliesYes I do think 10 - 20 dollars a month is taken seriously. It shows that we are trying and as a matter of fact I have a few of my non harrassing crazy creditors set up to take that amount from my account every month until I call them when we are back on our feet and can pay more.
Thank you very much! - grinDeb must be paying her bills using the kids child support and alimony. Tell me that I'm wrong?
- grandthe banks never lose money on a bad debt
- grandfrom what i read the banks never lose money on a bad debt...lets say you borrow one thousand dollars the banks reclassify the loan with the FDIC and gets ten thousand dollars, they take there one thousand dollars back that they let you borrow use the nine thousand dollars for investments or loaning more money out, take out a insurance policy on your loan which you pay off with those high interest rates they charge you, they they do collect for a maybe six months from you then you cant pay anymore then they write you off sell the account to the collection agency most they get is ten cents on the dollar put a claim in the insurance company and get there one thousand dollars back and then write it off as a tax lose.
so they got nine extra thousand dollars from the FDIC the insurance paid the bank back on the bad debt sold it to a collection agency say for one hundred dollars and did get some money from your payments and wrote it off on the taxes.so the debt was paid. - bam| 2 repliesthis for old skool..yes we do sign contracts but the company should follow them too..i have two bank of america accounts they are a unsecured,no doc businees loans.boa after six months wants documents i said no.i went away came home was two weeks late they went ahead and got a collection agency on one of my account and on the second account i wasnt even late my payment wasnt due until march 30th they gave it a another collection agency(nco) around march 24th,the laws says banks must wait until 180 days to sell it to a collection agency they have ta wait six monthe before they write it off so how come BOA doesnt have to follow the rules they just did it because i refuse to give them documents..oh yes i did call BOA and ask them why the other account went to the collection agency if i wasnt behind and she says becuse you was behind on the other account so what does one account have to do with the other.
anyway nco called me may 24th and is giving back the account to BOA they dont want to be invovled in the lawsuit, now nationwide who handles the other account is going to call me next week and i believe there going to give it back to BOA. - logic replies to Jeffif you dont like the terms of the contract then dont sign them,,, but if you do sign them,, then its time to grow up,,yes people get in trouble but 1)calling wrong numbers or deadends dont make any money so doesnt make any sense,,,2)if you lie or are being evasive with the company then what are they to think,,,fact is there more people that dont care or are trying to find loop holes to get out of it....JUST SO IT SINKS IN DONT SIGN THE CONTRACT IF YOU DONT LIKE THE TERMS.......
- logic replies to acj| 4 repliesso bad things happen to you and you blam it on the companys,, why does it matter how much time has gone by its still a valid debt,,and if you didnt like the terms of the contracts then you shouldnt have signed them,, then ur advised to IGNORE them, yeah sounds like you handle your buisness well,,and when people fall into a hardship its can take 4-5 years for someone to recover,,the debt is valid your just mad at the world and blaming the companys.....
- WorkingMyselfToDeath| 4 repliesI had been paying all our bills on time up until my husband lost his job 8 months ago and my plant closed. He can't even find a pizza delivery job. I have at least found a temporary job that will end in August. I'm working 12 hours a day sometimes 7 days a week to no avail. The creditors call me at least 12 times a day. I've stopped answering the house phone so now they call my personal cell phone which during working hours is actually used for work. I tell them not to call and they tell me they can't stop the "auto dialer" from calling me until I'm caught up. I've tried sending what I can $25 or $50 to the credit card companies but they tell me that won't stop my debit going to collections. They don't care if we don't eat or go homeless they still want their money. I now have a bleeding ulcer from the stress and a $15,000 hosptial bill to show for it (no insurance). Some of us get into debit due to things beyond our control. When my husband lost his job 8 months ago he had a full time job during the day and a part time job on the weekends. I also had a full time day job and a weekend job. In a span of 2 weeks (right before Xmas) my husband was laid off from the full time job, the part time job just closed it's doors with no warning. I lost my full time job due to a plant closure and lost my part time job because the contract wasn't renewed. So get off your d#$# high horse and stop telling us just to pay our bills!!!! We would if we could. My God if you make 6 figures as a bill collector you ought to be ashamed of yourself for harassing us hard working people who are going without A LOT of things due to our wonderful government who won't due sh^% for us with things like outrageous gas prices because they don't have to pay for their gas WE DO!!! Yeah right complain to congress, who has time for that when we're trying to work and make money to pay the late charges and over limit fees. And what good will it do? They won't do anything for us anyway. I only found this site today because I was trying to find out which creditor was calling me this time. Good luck to those of us who understand what we're all going through. Hopefully we'll all make it out of this mess before we die trying.
- criticthis is lame advice, debt collection agencies are staffed by worthless scum. they call me because i got a number that used to belong to somebody who apparently was in debt. they don't stop calling. bunch of idiots. the trick is to find out where they operate, track them down and beat the living hell out of one of them (pick the one that looks like he's the boss.) A tire iron works good, or use a baseball bat.
- grandworking my self to death...
dont pay the credit card companies anymore money if there going to send it to a collection agency, most of all dont get sick over the collection agencies.
pay your mortgage or rent and light bill and then the phone bill.when the collectores call you on a weekend say im sorry i dont discuss business on a weekend call me monday.also there are law firms that will help you if they harrass you and you dont even pau the legal fees the collection agency pays all fees.if the collectors knows your upset they will contiue to call you because now they have the edge over you.DONT LOSE ANY SLEEP OVER THESE PEOPLE.the most they can do is put a judgment on your name and when you get back on your feet then take care of it and there is so many programs out there that can clean up your credit some charge a lot of money others are reasonable.i had five irs tax liens on my file one was only two years old this guy wipe them off my credit file and then i got loans and credit cards i wish i had his name so i can give it to you.so when they say your crdit file will be bad for seven years you say get with the program for i can have all the derogertorys delelted in 90 days.
pay your neccesities and when things get better then you can make deals weith the collection agency to pay off the amount at half price but make sure you get a letter from them stating this bill is paid in full and no more monies are to be paid on this account. - grandworking my self to death.
sorry about the spelling my spell check isnt working - grand replies to Bighogbighog...all you have to do is tell the collector that being recorded and monitored makes you very upset please call ,e from a line that's not being recorded or monitored
- mack replies to collectors worst nightmare!!they lie..they make 7.50 to 10.50 an hour plus commission, yes itspassible if a lot of people paid last year but i dont think thats going to happen this year he will be lucky if he makes 30,000.00 this year and then he will be behind on his bills and collectors calling him...sweet revenge

Just the mention of your screen names sends shivers down my spine. I just wanted to comment briefly on your hospital bill issue. Your hospital may be able to "forgive your debt" to them, but you have to apply for a hardship discharge of the money owed. My son had over $20k in hospital bills (lousy insurance), he applied for Hardship and he was approved. If you can prove to the hospital that you really, really can't pay them, then they should forgive the debt.
As far as your creditors calling you at work - YES they can stop the auto-dialer from calling you. All they have to do is hit a few keys in the computer and take your number out. Have your home phone number disconnected and either get a new cell phone or put up w/the harassment. You can get Lingo or Vonage for $24.99/month and those numbers (so I am told) are not published so there is no way for the collectors to get your number.
Your first responsibility is to yourself and your family. You have to provide Food, Clothing, and Shelter. Use the Debt Snowball that Dave Ramsey talks about as an example to try and pay off some of your debt. I don't know how much of a pay cut you & hubby took, but it sounds significant.
Good luck and keep us posted.
