Harassing calls from a debt collector? Here is what you need to know

Debt collectors are highly motivated to convince debtors to pay the debt because they work on a commission. This business model has created the reputation for bill collection agencies that we know today. The collector might engage in threatening behavior and harassment. However, like any other business they are governed by laws that prohibit certain abusive practices.

These bill collectors will never give you their information, they hang up when you ask them not to call and try to tell them they have the wrong number. They want to see if they can harass and abuse you long enough that you succumb to extortion in an attempt to get them to go away. They will call multiple times a day and every time you have to change a phone number, you are at risk of falling prey to them. No amount of legal steps will ever get rid of them. Every time you try to divest yourself - even when it is obviously a wrong number - they can get your private, unrelated information. Our government and our legal agencies are just pawns, too lame to do anything about these carrion. Those that won't pay their bills, just change numbers, over and over and pollute the phone system with their pursuers. As always, the real problem people never pay - just everyone else.OUTLAW these callers. Enable consumers some way to block them permanently and get some respite from these criminals. The FDCPA is another joke that puts all the responsibility on the innocent and I am very doubtful that you would ever be able to collect - anymore than asserting your legal rights and telling them "wrong number" will make them quit harassing you.

First of all, the money most likely won't go to your creditor. If it's truly a collection agency, then your creditor has already written off the debt as a loss. Then these accounts are sold to these agencies, at a fraction of the amount of the debt, and the debt collectors try to recover the full amount. These guys are lowlifes and do not follow the law. I've had them curse at me, call me a deadbeat and try to tell me that if I pay them, the collection would be removed from my credit report. Unfortunately, only the company that placed the collection on your report can remove it. Or, if you protest the collection to the credit reporting agency that it shows up on. They can remove it. But, ONLY after you have proven to them there was clearly a mistake and it should have never been reported as a collection. So, the bottom line is that these people will tell you anything and everything to get you to pay the debt. The best defense is a good offense. Document all correspondences and make sure they send everything to you in writing, to include any promises that they make. Another gimmick that works really well, is to record your conversations with the collection agency, if you have the capability. You must first acknowledge to them that you are recording and if they consent to being recorded. You'll be amaze how fast their attitude changes when they know you're recording the conversation. And lastly, if they are not playing fair with you or harassing you at all hours, you can file a grievance with Federal Trade Commission, the Attorney Generals office in your state and the Attorney Generals in the state they are operating from.

I get threatening phone calls DAILY, claiming check fraud, cases filed in my name, they're coming to my home or work, etc, so I'd better call them TODAY...all because my mother & her dirtbag husband gave my name & number as a reference on something. I do not answer or call them back. This has been going on for 6+ years now. I block the calls & they call from another #, sometimes just 1 digit different. Does no good to report them. Can't just change my # that I have had for 15 years because it is my business mobile #. Everyone of my 300+ contacts would have to be called & notified of new #!!

There's an app called Mr Number. You can set it up so only your contacts' call can get through.

There are smartphone apps, the best features are in the "pay" apps but free apps are available too, that allow you to block calls from area codes, area codes with a 3 digit suffix, specific numbers, etc. For example, a ploy is to spoof YOUR number, as follows. Say your number is 555-234-1234. They will create a false number 555-234-9746. So this number calls, you answer it and voila - a harassing call. People tend to answer numbers close to their own for some bizarre reason. So, use the app and block all "555-234" numbers. Problem solved. Also, these apps give you a list of when these numbers called. Oh, the number isn't actually blocked - it's forwarded to your voicemail and it doesn't hit your phone. But as I wrote, a record is kept for you. They also work for "private" and "blocked" numbers if you want those too.  So if someone calls and they don't want you to know who they are, fine; they can talk to voicemail. Works for me. (fyi: I'm not an app developer.)

some time ago a collection agency called me. a bill i owed had gone missing for a year. the goons finally found it and called me and threatened me with harassing them and said they would ruin my credit. i said send me the bill. thats when they got mad. so i called my lawyer, who kicked that goon's ass. the agency was highly rated. probably because they have such strongarm men with them! (most of the bill was insured.)

I got a call from a number in "New York" saying that they're giving me a heads up that i will be receiving a summon in the next few days and if i will respond to their call they will stop sending the summon to me. I contacted this person named David Stevenson and he said he's from New York working at Black Rock Mitigation a collection agency.. He sounds very legit and stupid of me that i gave them permission to deduct through my debit account. ( so Stupid of me)... But anyways a week after they actually did get the money as agreed on that phone call and recurring auto pays for 3 payments. a day after they deduct money from me i received a summon!!! I called them the following day and traced that there was only one agency that they reported and this " Black Rock " is a scam! I closed my account the same day. I called this scammers and told them to stop collecting money from me and they were already reported to my bank for a stop payment. I apologize for letting u guys know how dumb i am but economy hit me hard and it's harder that scammers are the worst nightmare! Horrible! BTW, I am at present settling my account to the right agency and I just wish that these scammers will get what they deserve! Lesson Learned!
