The real police should find them, and lock them all up, and end this foolishness once and for all.

Just because something is against the law doesn't mean "nobody dares do it again". Many things are against the law but criminals still do them.

I've got the same male Indian person on different days, with the "lower your credit card balance" scam.  I know it's the same guy, because he's got a distinctive accent (trying to sound more 'Murican) and a bad attitude.  I answer them for fun, and keep them on the line as long as possible.

Every day.  Maybe once, but sometimes two or three times.  Robo looking for donations from the police whatever.  No opt out option.  No one to talk to - or yell at.  Can't block them, it's always a different fake number.

Actually it's not against the law.  They are, in fact, doing it in conjunction with the police and they hand over whatever portion they contractually agree to.  They do, however,  take most of the proceeds and are required to tell you that they are paid fundraisers if you ask.  It's legal.  Think of it as a net profit for a business.  If the police association gets 30% for doing nothing, it's not so bad.  You don't have to like it or contribute, but it's perfectly legal if they're following the disclosure rules and aren't holding themselves out to be police.  The good ones sound like police, but don't go to the point to say they are.

No name showing on my caller ID and a local phone number showing, so probably using voice over internet.  The caller said it was Police Officers Support Association.  Their web site shows that this is a PAC and so donations are not tax deductible.  The money appears to go to politicians and not police officers.

If only the hero charity operations were so black-and-white as the police vehicles they're not buying for supposedly needy departments. The newer crop "support" police purportedly by funding Congressional lobbyists. More room there than ever for ways to confuse the public and hide the profits. Often the first time actual police officers hear about the charity drive is after someone complains to them about the call barrage from "Steve Savage" et al.

Meantime the same old problems remain regarding poor compliance with the Telemarketing Sales Rule and a few state laws. I stand behind my remarks from two years ago and add some more outside reading.

Sure legitimate charities can ignore the “do not call” list… they are (if I remember correctly) required to stop calling once you tell them to stop.

So… this charity sure has all the warning signs of “scam”.

You should work on your reading comprehension. I didn't say it was against the law. I simply said that if something is against the law it doesn't stop criminals from doing it.

These phony disguised PACs do indeed use endless spoofed fake phone numbers. However, you can buy home phone systems that effectively FILTER out these scumbags, because they're NOT stupid enough to leave a live verbal reply; the phone system, in turn, REJECTS the call ( you never know they even called )....and you have regained peace and quiet.
