It is a scam. Someone is guessing information (or you said something and didn't realize you'd fed him information) about your computer and is trying to trick you into downloading harmful software and/or trick you into paying money to fix an imaginary problem. Do not give them any information, do not pay them money, do not even talk to them.

CJ is right.  Total scam.  This is a very common fraud and appears in many other threads; you can check under "Forum Threads" here  on 800notes.

Here is a copy of a post by "Julia" re the same issue:

    "
Scam for sure... We have a few reported numbers that share the same story (a guy claims he is calling from Microsoft because you have virus on your computer.)

    https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-213-261-7441
    https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-510-722-6000

The users say the callers have Indian accent. Did your caller have an accent? Might be the same outfit or something else entirely."

    Don't fall for it!

    These guys are calling everybody.
They say they got the information that your computer has a virus when you sent error reports to Microsoft.
This was on the news last week.

Tell them you know it is a sales scam and hang up.

This is a worldwide scam but the most damage has been done to people who live in countries where the main spoken language is English.  They called our IT guy at home, knew his name and home phone number.  He said they guy barely spoke English and was really rude.  Supposedly they download phone directories from the Internet so even if you think your number is unlisted it might actually be available online.  Made the TV news.

My computer has a virus said the caller in very poor English. I responded oh, what shall I do?. He had a very hard time hearing me and asked me to speak up. I told him to tell the rest of the guys in the boiler room to shut up. He replied "[***] you" and hung up

I just received an SMS message on my cell phone through my carriers system from 206-456-0905 and all the message said was " (Wells Fargo issue) Call 12064560905".  Weird.  But now on the cell

I had so many calls from these people.  I even accused them of being crazy, but they kept calling back.  Until I told him I didn't use windows, I use Linux,  and he hung up.

Had a call from these guys just today.... I had a lovely conversation with them for 30 minutes... let's just say I was a little bored.  I ended up speaking to three of these people on the one phone call, each one of them started swearing at me and got really angry after I asked them to prove to me they were from Microsoft... They eventually got the clue (after a very long time) that I wasn't falling for their scam and they decided to hang up on me.

I just had a call today from someone with a foreign accent telling me I have a virus on my computer, that it was sending messages to them from my computer. I told him I would call Microsoft myself. He was persistent so I hung up. The call was from an unknown number.

Here's all the answers you need:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx

    "Avoid tech support phone scams
Cybercriminals don't just send fraudulent email messages and set up fake websites. They might also call you on the telephone and claim to be from Microsoft. They might offer to help solve your computer problems or sell you a software license. Once they have access to your computer, they can do the following:

    • Trick you into installing malicious software that could capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords. They might also then charge you to remove this software.

    • Take control of your computer remotely and adjust settings to leave your computer vulnerable.

    • Request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services.

    • Direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information there.

Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes."

"Once they've gained your trust, they might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a website to install software that will let them access your computer to fix it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information is vulnerable.

Do not trust unsolicited calls. Do not provide any personal information."

"As you now realize, this was not Microsoft, but was a scam, and one that's becoming more and more common lately.

But worse, if you let them into your computer, who knows what damage they did there or what confidential information they stole."

    http://www.hoax-slayer.com/microsoft-callers-scam.shtml

Microsoft doesn't cold call! Heck, they don't have ESP either and CAN'T know whether or not someone has a virus or some other harmful element on their computer! To think they do would be sheer fantasy! If you ever needed a MS Customer Support person YOU would call them ... it's never the other way around! All these filthy fake cold calls claiming to be Microsoft are all from offshore boiler rooms most likely out of Mumbai, India! No one should ever fall for these trashy scammers and their scams!!!

get these calls several times a week and I too am on no call list but that does not stop them.  They are very rude and curse at you when I say I am a IT tech and I let no one have access other then myself. They really get mad and the background noise is so loud and you can barely understand caller.  They don't like to take NO for an answer and then the jerk starts swearing at you. There are so many scams out there and more new ones everyday and all from foreign countries people just know who you are talking to and NEVER let anyone try to take control of what is yours other then yourself.

I only let two other people besides myself touch my computer-my brother and my tech guy who's my best friend. IT techs will NEVER cold call you people!
