Not to mention S-100 bus, paper tape, cassette tape, 8 inch floppies, ttys, Decwriters, acoustic modem couplers, CP/M, N*, Processor Tech, Imsai, Altair, Poly88, Cromemco, Osborne, Kaypro, TRS-80/Trsdos, and so many others, many of which now live in my basement...nostaligia attack in progress...someone bring me a copy of Byte magazine and a root beer...

While I agree that name blocking would be a nice part of the feature set, scammers change CNAMs as often as they change CNUMs, and you would have to be careful about overlapping names. Parsing is everything.

I owned my call blocker for about 3 weeks and currently have 24 numbers added to my blocklist.

I do agree with you that it's a big cat and mouse game and have seen some name changes like you mentioned.

I had one caller which my blocker quickly hung up on. Then about 5 minutes later I get a "private number" call (which I rarely receive) that leads me to think that the caller I just blocked called again with a private number setting.

With my call blocker, if I average having to add 1 new call a day, my device still won't fill up until about 4 years from now.

The one ring (actually more like a half ring) then hang up is nice as this morning I barely noticed as I was still asleep.

You've obviously never been called by Robo-Rachel and Card Holder Services! They use every trick in the book from the called ID showing cell or wireless caller, tweaked names of real corporations, numbers from every area code in the country and more. My last blocker had over 65 numbers from them. Recently I have gotten telemarketer calls and absolutely NOTHING appears on caller ID at all. My caller box recently died and I am having a tough time replacing it.

I just want a simple land-line device with caller ID that acts as a blocker that prevents anonymous calls and allows me to block specific numbers on a case by case basis. Almost everything I have seen goes too far. Some toll free numbers I need to receive calls from so I can't blanket block them. Some telemarketers and charities call from regular exchanges and once I find out who they are I can block that number. I don't care about having a bunch of messages explaining why the call is being blocked, I don't need special rings, just a simple caller ID box with individual number blocking.

You may/maynot like this item. What I like about it, is the ability to whitelist or blacklist. You can also block by area code, if you want. It's pretty easy to use, no batteries. The downside (once again) it will only block 120 numbers, or area codes. I don't own the company, & don't make anything from sales, so it's just something for you to think about.

Try this call blocker Call Valet-Pro from www,.dastalk.com. It is a god sent thing. Costs only $79.99. You can block any number. You can block any numbers of area codes (887, 555, etc.) and area code with exchange code (888323, 905213, etc.). you can block callers with unknown numbers and private callers. With the keypad you can you can enter any number and block it. It might be useful to block your mother-in-law or your ex-spouse. But if you change your mind, you can unblock them.  There is not any such thing in the matrket. I am really happy with it.

Look back at the messages I've posted here about TrueCall. It does exactly that -- and more. I've had mine for about nine months now and have had zero problems with it. And for what it's worth, you have 1000 numbers available for your combined white list and black list. I have no numbers on the black list, since numbers not on the white list are handled properly anyway. Adding someone to the blacklist does allow you to turn them away with a different message, however.

They are a UK company and you can't order for US delivery directly from their web site but they do sell a model tailored (somewhat) for the US market that you can order via email.

I've been getting so many crap calls per day for years now & I've tried everything to block these calls.  I purchased a Digitone Call Blocker for @ $100 but it only blocks up to 80 numbers--so, that wasn't going to work.  I used TrapCall for several months (for $10/month) but, although it does what it claims, TrapCall still allows your phone to ring 4 times (even for a blocked number) before it picks up the call & that drove me crazy.    For the last month or two, I've been using PhoneTray Pro & I love it.  It's software you download to your computer & your computer must have a phone modem.  PhoneTray does everything I want it to do & then some.  True, you must keep your computer on for it to work.  So, I am using an old Windows XP laptop & it works great.  The number of calls has been reduced, IMHO, at least 90% because the caller receives a 'this number has been disconnected" announcement.  

Personally, since these calls constitute harassment, I think the phone providers should be responsibile for stopping these calls to their customers.  They have the means and the power to do it.  I've called  Verizon several times about it.  A rep from Verizon told me that if I made a police report, Verizon could then put a tracer on the calls.  When I went to the police station, they wanted me to provide a name & address of the caller.  Since I was unable to provide that information, the police would not let me make a report.  When I explained how I was being harassed by all of the calls I was receiving, they thought I was nuts.  It may take a class action or individual lawsuit to get Verizon & all of the phone companies to step in and stop these calls.  One of us has start litigation against the phone providers.   As customers, they owe us a duty to protect their customers from harassment calls since we are paying to use their communication services & the harassers are improperly using those services to continue their harassment by these unwanted & unsolicited calls.

Be wary of smart phone apps of all types, they are increasingly being designed to harvest information from the user based on GPS location and keywords entered during text messages. There are even a few out there that will activate your camera when you get near a designated GPS grid location WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE !! This information is invaluable to the users. A good example of this is your Supermarket discount card. The information about what and how much you eat, drink, and smoke is purchased and used by virtually all of the major heath care insurance companies to determine your risk level and what rates they will charge you. I am involved in the development of these types of technology and what is on the plate for the future is even more scary! How about  DVR that actually watches your facial expressions during commercials!!

The Telemarketing Lobby is very powerful and has been pretty successful in keeping these devices from being manufactured and/or distributed in the USA. Just as the Oil Companies have been able to minimize the amount of electric vehicles available here in the USA.

I found this software that runs on Windows PCs with a modem.  It is called Identafone Pro and costs about $40.00.  You have to do some work in creating and maintaining a blacklist but it seems to work.  I am using it on its free trial right now.  I might purchase it.

We have Panasonic Dect6 phones with 30 blocked numbers. Blocked calls ring once. 30 Numbers is not enough.

I want 3 choices ... white list rings through .... block list hangs up without ringing...all others get recorded without ringing. Blocking wild cards, area codes etc. can lead to blocking calls I'd want to get.

All call blockers still being sold do one and two, but not three ... sending all other calls to the answering machine. A few discontinued machines used to do all three.

I use a land line for voice quality and reliability.  I don't want to run the land line throiugh a computer software program 24/7. I don't want to send all my calls to an answering machine to screen them.  Just want those three choices. Seems impossible to get at any price.
