A lesson about strange-looking phone numbers

Just so you all know, numbers like "708-000-0001" are NOT legitimate telephone numbers anywhere in the North American Numbering Plan Area (NANPA).  In NAMPA, the country code for all countries in the area, including the United States, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, Dominica, Puerto Rico, and many lesser pieces of sand and rock floating in the Caribbean Islands that tourists and tax evaders use, is "1."  You often do not have to dial a "1" before any of these numbers if you are using a phone that has a number under this plan, but that depends on your particular telephone area and company.

Otherwise, the rest of the digits HAVE to be (with the exception of a few special codes like 911 and 411) NXX-NXX-XXXX, where any "N" digit is 2 through 9, and any "X" digit is 0 through 9.  If either of the "N"s is a 0 or a 1, that's a dead giveaway that the number is either not from the US, Canada, or any Caribbean Island that is part of NANPA, or that the number is spoofed.

If you are in the United States or Canada, commit that last paragraph to memory and it will save you a lot of trouble.

It never ceases to amaze me that people here  assume numbers that have these off beat exchanges are legitimate or legal if it is related to politics. I had some sort of political call and the number had 200 as an exchange and or area code. Several people claimed it was legal under the DNC act. I disagree for the simple reason that the number was an obvious fake and that any legitimate organization would display their actual number.

Agreed MidNYte-if they are hiding their number, they have something to hide and therefore are not a true, legitimate business

How many times do I have to say it-criminals are NOT going to abide by the DNC list!
