Left me a msg saying they were  debt collecting   I have no outstanding debt. Unknown caller id

I didn't see a number come up on my phone but this was the number they left in a message. They said they were a debt collector collecting a debt and would appreciate a call back. I don't know what debt she could have been referring to.

They called and said they were a debt collector. I have no credit cards so I don't know what they are trying to collect on.

Voice mail indicating the company name and that they were a debt collector.  Did not state who specifically they were looking for, just assumed the phone number associated with debtor.  Since they are trying to collect for a third party would have been nice to indicate that, so I would know if it is a company I have done business with.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
