I got the same call and message. I did not call back. I knew it was scam.That's mainly I read your comments and that's very helpful.

Do call and report fraud at the FTC number given in other posts, and also report it to the FCC, online they have a great short form to fill out -- many of us do ten or twenty of these every so often as these idiots need to be stopped. For FTC, search for violations of Do Not Call list.

This is some coward hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service.  He's no better than a common criminal using a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.

You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .

This scam has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India.  There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.

MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada.  In India, see, for example,

So it doesn't take long to turn a profit, even if only 0.1% of the people they call are stupid enough to believe the scammers.

In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp.  This is a fully-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks.  YMAX Corp. is in charge of assigning telephone numbers to magicJack devices.  I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.

Just got the call this morning, and wife freaked out, she was really concerned, we have had trouble years ago with I.R.S. I could tell it was a fake. Wonder how many get duped into this one, like the letters from Nigeria. Googled it and wound up here.

got the same message from this number (202-241-2158) on 6/9/14 and knew  it's scam. for fun I call back at 10:00 pm and no ring at all !!!

Filing a complaint with the FTC is F-R-E-E.  Don't know where you got the idea you have to pay to file a complaint with them.

Got a call from this number today 6/11 2014. Scam. Dont call back.

If you get a call from this number, it is a scam. Do not call it back. I received a call on June 11, 2014 that said: "This message is intended for you. You or your retained attorney must respond. This is Officer Hada Grey of the Internal Revenue Service. My number is 202-241-2158. I repeat, 202-241-2158. Return this call before we take any legal action against you."  The day before, on May 19, I received the identical phone call from 202-241-1366, and by Googling that phone number I discovered that it is a scam that several other people have received. The IRS will not contact tax offenders by telephone, they will send a letter by certified mail.

Received a phone call from this number 202-241-2158 today on June 13th and left a message.  Called back and told me I owed IRS a lot of money and needed my attorney's name.  That I was not home to sign for the letter they sent me and my driver license was suspended as a result (I contacted DMV and this is untrue).  And I should be waiting to receive court paper.

Today my husbands cell phone rang, i answered it, and it was this very same message. It said I'm Heather Gary, same name...beware of this call, I decided to Google it, glad I did.

As Esther reported, the message claimed to be from a Hada Gray of the IRS. I was asked to call back before they take action against me. This message was left about 10 minutes ago, at 858 am. The callerid said "DIST OF COLUMBI"

I received a call from the same number yesterday (Jun 13 2014) at 1144 am. No message was left.

Got one this morning from Officer HAda Grey. The exact message someone posted earlier.

They didn't even try to be convincing. What a dumb scam. Federal agencies will never contact individuals by phone, ONLY by US Mail. City agencies will sometimes (rare) contact you through telephone, BUT will always be accompanied by a letter in the mail in regards to the same matter.

And one more thing, IRS law enforcement officers refer to themselves as "AGENTS", like most federal agencies, but not all.

Received a phone call from 1-202-241-2158 today. I answered, and an automated voice informed me that they were the IRS, and that I needed to call their number (which I couldn't write down fast enough, and it wasn't repeated) or legal action would be taken against me. I googled the number and ended up here - so thankful to find out it's just a scam!!

 It scared me, then I Googled the number and found out that it was a scam. these idiots can cause a heart attack if they keep it up.

I received a recorded phone call today 6-16-14 stating that I need to call back and retain an attorney for back taxes for the IRS in Washington D.C. when I asked for paperwork verification she put me on hold and then was being coached and Extremely rude and said everything was already mailed off and we didn’t respond. Since I know this to be false I then asked to speak to a supervisor when Officer Brown said for what I told her it was to get further explanation since we weren’t understanding each other she then said that the police would be showing up shortly with a arrest warrant and hung up.

When I called back a man answered and said they were looking for someone else and to never call back again and hung up.

I called back a 3rd time to ask for a supervisor at which point he told me to call 911 and report him.
Both people had a heavy accent.

It doesn't cost to file complaint. It's free to the public. I do it all the time through this website.

calls from 202-241-2158 are from scammers who have done this before in the past. Do not call them back.

They are still at it.  I got a part of a message yesterday with that same phone number and of course the threat.  I suspected it was a scam of some sort but didn't know who.  Today, I googled the number and found all of you.  Just goes to show you that it is so easily to get scared when someone threatens to "take legal action" against you if you don't think first.  Glad all of you did think and didn't get caught in this scam.  Oh...one other thing...they are now using a automated type of voice.
