I and my two retired friends got the call today, June 18. What is police doing to stop this? Nothing?.

Same message, computer female voice about IRS. I did call and report to the www.ftc.gov I read that someone said there is a charge to do this. It is FREE. I report all these robo calls now. I also do not answer any numbers I do not recognize but you do have to be careful now that caller ID numbers can be "spoofed" to show any name they want.

Been getting called from this number all day. No voicemail though. I called back and just get busy tone.

I got the same message verbatim as Esther received. The red flag for me was the automated recording and the fact that they didn't identify whom they were trying to reach. I always google a suspicious call before I return it. Not everybody has that opportunity. Thank goodness for sites like this one. I will report to FTC too.

Got the exact same robocall as Esther (and I've been on the Do Not Call registry since 2005). Did a quick search on "IRS" and the phone number and got this site - thanks everyone for the reports; huge relief.  Filed a report on the FTC and yes, it was free.

I received a call today from (202)241-2158 and recording message said it was Heather Gray of IRS, and she wants me to call her back.  It is a scam.

Yes I did received the call from this number also and I too made the mistake to call back. The guy on the other end did not identify him self and when I refuse to give any information he stars yelling at me. Just leave clear the I.R.S. Does not call they always communicated by USPS only and when you call them their answer machine identify their line as the I.R.S. Line. If you get a call from this number don't bother to call back it's a SCAM.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

I got the same phone call from a male with heavy Indian accent. He told me to call this number back and look for the senior IRS officer Daniel Peacher.

I received this call today and remembered having seen these posts, so hung up.  Thank you for posting so people don't panic and fall for this scam.  I will report it to the FCC today.

I received a call from this number - no message.  I searched the number and read the info on this site before I called back.  The man that answered said he was "Kevin Parker" from the IRS.  If any IRS agent answers the phone, they are supposed to give their full name and badge number immediately.  He did not.  I asked him for his badge number and he got aggitated and started giving me the number - only 5 digits.  Not an IRS badge number.  I asked him, is that it - only 5 digits?  He said, "You're not responding to me, how do I know you're still there?  You didn't let me finish."  I said, sir, I'm having a hard time believing you're with the IRS, please transfer me to your direct supervisor.  He hung up on me.  I called back - wanting the rest of his badge number so I could report the call to the IRS (www.tigta.gov) and he gave it to me, then proceeded to threaten me by saying he will be taking legal action against me and also just posted my name and my personal information on Craigslist.  Clearly a scam.  I've reported it to the IRS.  Do not give them any money or share any information with these people.

I got one today, June 25th.  I called the IRS & they don't take complaints over the phone, it's fax or mail only.  It's 100% a scam.  They will try to get you to give information over the phone and they also try to hack your phone if you call them back.

I work with several folks here in Washington, so I thought it was one of them. This bad tempered male with a badly acted "stern" voice tells me at 7:53 this morning that the IRS will take action against me for underreporting taxes dating back to 2009, and that the registered letter has not been answered. He mocked me and told me that I was a weak woman with no will to fight the government. I have to call this number within 24 hours with a secured deposit in my checking account to avoid prosecution.

Son, If you called me and are reading this, then you need to know that I'm posting this in Washington, D.C., where the call came from, and if you need to find me face to face, then I will meet you with my lawyer and present formal papers charging you personally with organized crime, wire fraud and other charges that I can throw at you. "Heather Gray," you are now on notice.

Got call on 6.26.14.  Returned it.  Sounded strange because the person answering did not have a badge number to give me not to mention the amount that they quoted that I owed the IRS was wrong.  

Dont bother, the IRS should contact you via cert mail not a phone call.  

I got a call today 6/26/14 from 202-666-1065 and a man with a very thick accent asked me if I was Amanda and I said yes and he told me the us gov't picked me to get 1000 dollars and I wouldn't have to pay it back. I , of course, said "no,  no, no I don't buy it, sorry" and he hung up. Two or three minutes later he called back and I answered and said is this the same guy with the money I don't want and he stuttered and said he was from Pakistan and was  coming tomorrow to kill me to avenge my killing his family. I could barely understand him and had to make him repeat it, his accent was so thick. He stated my address which you could get from public records and I told him I was going to the police. He said go to the police I will kill you tomorrow. I live very near the police I went there and told the police lady and she said they been getting a lot of these lately. They try to intimidate you into giving them money. She told me not to answer ( I wasn't planning to) and don't call them back ( thought never crossed my mind). I blocked the number. Just a warning to anyone out there.

area code 619 at 9;55 am June 25 received a call from 202-241-2159. Said they were from the IRS and if I didn't return their call as soon as possible I'd would be arrested. A weird electronic female voice.

Nothing much the police or anyone else can do.  These people are scammer/extortionists located in India.  They are beyond the reach of US law.  

Call blocker is your best bet.   Might be a good idea to block all calls coming from area code 202

The call came from India. It did not come from DC.   This is an on-going scam coming out of call-centers in India and Pakistan.  As such they are beyond the reach of US law.   They are essentially bullet proof.  The phone number is spoofed.

No sense in arguing  with them on the phone.  They just  get abusive, but being Indian,  their accent is such that they can't really intimidate you.    They will get sexually abusive with women.  They like to pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community.  These are not random calls;  they know who their victims are.
