- Steven| 1 replyThis was clearly a phishing Scam targeting the elderly and those who don't know the collection laws in the US. All collection agencies and tax administrations have to send you letters before they contact you by phone. And if the IRS or another tax collecting agency calls you they would not use an automated dialer. If you get this call just hang up the phone. For any debt collector to seize your assets they need a judgement from a court or a warrant (for tax collections) that gives them a legal authority to do so.
- Caller: IRS Scam
- RexIRS replies to StevenThis is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). - Roxane| 1 replyReturned a call in response to a robot voicemail from the "IRS". Was an incredibly authentic experience. THe gentleman read me the charges that the IRS was filing against me. There were 2 - one was tax fraud. He said I could ask questions at the end. I asked why I hadn't receive notice before this call. He claimed that 2 pieces of certified mail were sent to my home but because I wasn't there to sign, the post office left door tags. He asked if I had an attorney (and it had better be a criminal attorney) because I was hands down, no questions asked going to be arrested by the county sheriff. He went on and stated that if I couldn't come up with $6,700, the fees would rise for bond and court costs to $15,000. He really had me convinced so I just said that I was contacting my attorney and would call back.

- lc replies to PamThe scammers are in India. There is nothing that anyone can do, short of the government, to get at these thieves and stop. The reason that our government has a problem in running them down and prosecuting is because of the lack of cooperation by the Indian and Pakistanian governments. This whole thing is not just local law breakers. It is an international affair and must by handled government to government and at the same time observe diplomatic proprieties and protocol. It sucks...yes....but that's how it is.

Indian accent should be a dead giveaway that this is a scam.
Any time you receive a cold-call from anyone with an Indian accent who 1. offers you something or 2. threatens you, you should be 100% aware that it is most likely a scam . Hang up. Do not return the calls.
These calls are not random. They have all of your financial information and a lot of personal information. They target women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community. Also anyone else they think might be vulnerable. If you call them and they sense vulnerability they will attempt to hammer you with calls.. - virginia citizenRobo Call message left by "IRS Agent julie smith" - saying contact my attorney of record - don't ignore this message it is a serious matter. contact us before we take action.

- HeatherReceived a call from this fake computer dialer as well on 8-27-14 at 10:15 am saying not to disregard the call and get hold of them before they take action. As I have a basic familiarity with state and federal laws I knew this was a scam. This number will be reported to the proper authorities and channels . Hopefully we can stamp out these leeches of society together. Please if you get a phone call like this Report it. That is the only way the hard working citizens of this great nation can take a stand against these parasites
- Hank MoodyGot this same call from 202-506-8392 at 12:36 PM here in Southern California. Exact same message about: How I need to call immediately or risk arrest. The voice sounded robotic. I'm reporting these nimcompoops to my local authorities.
