Received this robotic female voice message this morning @ 7:30 a.m.  Very threatening.  Thanks to THIS website I could ascertain it was a scam.  Thanks for providing the link to the Treasury website with details.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for this.

The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone. The scammers use voice over IP lines (e.g. magicjack (Ymax corporation). This is always against these companys' terms of use and can lead to termination of their contract. However only law enforcement can initiate the contact if you yourself are not a customer. Therefore, report it also to your local law enforcement agency. Ultimately this is a case for the FBI legal attache in Islamabad or New Delhi. If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction (and the NSA can finally be a force for good).

Dear Senator/Representative XXX

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to demand decisive action from the FBI, the IRS and other federal agencies against organized crime directed against American citizens from abroad.

As widely reported by local and national media all across the United States and warned about by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (see http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm) a tidal wave of fraud using Internet phones has hit the United States. Millions of dollars already have been stolen by criminals impersonating federal officers from the IRS while hiding in countries like India and Pakistan, where most of the calls originate. There seems to be no end of it in sight.

I have personally been targeted by these scammers but it is the most vulnerable among us that I am concerned about primarily. The scheme is specifically singling out those that can least defend themselves against these crimes, in particular the elderly. I am also worried that given the origin of these gangsters, the money stolen from US citizens may be used for financing of terrorism or other activities directed against the national interests of the United States. But in spite of this clear and present danger to our country and its citizens I have seen no action worth mentioning by the FBI, the IRS or other federal agencies so far.

As a member of Congress overseeing the law enforcement agencies tasked with fighting fraud and ensuring national security, I implore you to make sure that they act on these threats and are given all the necessary resources to target these criminals in cooperation with foreign law enforcement.

they said they were or the IRS. THEY SAID DO NOT DISREGARD THIS MESSAGE AS IT WAS FOR THE IRS. TO CALL THEM INMEDIATELY OR THEY WOULD TAKE ACTION.

Same here got calls from both 202-506-7463 & 202-506-9812 today
Hit * 67 to block my # and got what sounded like a computerized male voice saying " hello" both times

I have received this call eight times in the last two days. Woman tells me to call back at a different # within 24 hours or I am going to jail.

As  you can see from the other comments here this is just a scam run by overseas criminals. Just ignore all calls of this type and go on about your normal business.  Do alert friends, neighbors and relatives, especially older ones, about this scam and that it could come from a wide range of numbers.

Recieved a recorded message "this is Officer heada grey from the Internal Revenue Service and the hotline  to my division is 202-506-9726 don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any legal allegation against you good bye and take care".  This is ridiculous I have reported this number to local law enforcement, sent emails to the IRS and other agencies.

Just got a call from this 202-506-9726 #, woman "named" Heather from the IRS said if i didn't return the call that legal allegations would be filed against me.

I just got the same call - a recorded message asking to call back. Her name was Heather from the IRS. Sounded like a scam. Thanks for the info!

I got a recorded phone call from 202 506 9726 female voice but didn't catch her name this morning but said to return the call before legal action is taken on me.  When I returned the call, a male with accent answered the phone, confirmed my name and my address.  "Are you aware of the legal action that has been brought against you?  Do you have a lawyer?" I said "No" Then he said "There are three charges brought against you for failure to pay backtaxes in the amount of more than $7000 for 2009-2010.  You need to get a lawyer and settle this in court."  I told him how come I was never got any notice about this and all of a sudden I have to go to court over backtaxes.  It doesn't make sense at all, I pay my taxes faithfully every year, maybe there was time that I miscalculated but ok if that is the case then ok I'm willing to make payment.  He said sternly, "You don't just owe $7000 now but you owe $25,000!!"  Then I said, "What, are you sure you got the right person, because when I file my taxes I filed it under my legal name not my married name."  Then I started telling him "Just to make sure that this is the right person, what is my social security?"  He said it will be provided to me in the court and then I said you have not answered my question, I filed my name under my legal name and not my married and that he got the wrong person"  then got so mad, "you're just saying this to delay the process" and hung up.  I called IRS right away and confirm that I indeed have 0 balace on my taxes indeed and informed them of this incidnet.  The IRS agent said "We're aware of this scam going on so please report any incident to IRS."

I got the apparent voicemail too, but the phone never actually rang...?   I called back just for the fun and this Indian woman started telling me "Yes, this is the IRS...."   You could hear multiple people on the background of this call center all saying the same crap.

I wonder how many people actually send them money?

Not everyone files a complaint with the authorities, so the damage wrought by these low lie crooks who prey on the elderly and the vulnerable in general may be much higher.

Called told me not to ignore gave a name of the person, threaten legal action.

Received a call this morning at 8:14.  IRS Washington, DC.  A woman by the name of Julie Smith.  Called back but had to leave a message.  I've been a basket case all day :(
