    Alexandre Roujnikov
We are two Australian who wanted to visit NYC in January 2011. We decided to rent not a hotel but an apartment.
We used http://newyork.craigslist.org/, (vacation rental in NYC/Manhattan) site and found “Edwardo-Suite vacation rental”, agent Jane Synovec.
The details of agent given to us are: jane.synovec724@yahoo.com, Licence 10029NY, the address of the apartment 57W 58th St, NY 1019 and phone numbers: 216 539 7410, 347 321 4629.
Jane offered to meet us at the airport and bring us to the apartment. She emailed us the rental agreement and on 20th of December we paid via Western Union the deposit of $655 to her husband Michael Williams of 18 South 18th Street, Terre Haute, In 47802.
The details of transaction are below:
Sender's name and address: Alexandre Roujnikov, 63 Fosters Rd, Keilor Park 3042, Vic, Australia
    MTCN: 1974958764
    Amount sent: $655
Jane Synovec acknowledged by email that she received the booking fee of $655 and asked us to transfer $350 as she “forgot” the security deposit and cleaning fees. I requested the receipt for $655 first and promised to pay the balance on the spot when in NYC.
She did not respond to my phone calls or email afterwards.
Now I believe that we became the victims of fraud

    Dear All,

We were looking for an apartment for April on Craiglist. I sent e-mails to 10 different e-mail addresses as we saw a lot of apartment that could be suitable for us! 8 of 10 e-mails were scams!

Also last year we were about to book a house in East Village for the NY holidays, there were 6 of us, and we were looking for a really good apartment, so we were about to send them around USD 2000, thanks God one of our friends had problems with her visa and we went to Cuba ))
Here is the very useful site with all the addresses (they try to update it regularly).

~ not sure it is a Nigerian scam but it is most definitely a scam!!!!
I was literally on my way to Western Union to send $ when a friend suggested I google that 'good-looking-on-paper' rental agreement - very close call.
Did go to NYC and stayed at a reputable hotel. Wandered to 57 W.58th to check it out: the person at the front desk said that more than 50 (!) people, some with little children in tow, had come assuming to sstay at this good-deal apt.- for which they'd ofcourse already paid a hefty deposit!
So sad but it makes me mad!!! Is there anyway to report this to authorities?

Wow I am glad, I bumped onto this site. I was about to book with Tracy Jones too. But thanks to all of you who have posted here. It sounded freaky to me, cos it  was just like 50 bucks a night right in manhattan, which is really unbelievable. All scam I guess.

As with all the messages above, we responded to an ad in Craigslist about a Manhattan apartment for $100 a night. After an exchange of friendly emails with Kimberly_wallace01@yahoo.com we got a plausible looking contract for Edwardo-Suite Vacation Rentals. Alarm bells rang when we were asked to pay the deposit by Western Union for collection by her husband Joseph Saltsman in Kentucky. I called this Cleveland OH phone number and it doesn't exist. The address given for the apartment was 251 W 71 St,New York,10023.

Thank you for all the earlier posts that helped to identify it as a scam. If something seems too good to be true it probably is...
