Some marketing agency using SCE's phone list to make cold calls of some sort. I pretended to be the long dead person on their list and then they hung up.

I got a call saying that they were calling about a cancellation of my Yellow Pages ad. They were incredibly pushy and tried to get me to authorize the cancellation in order to get a "cancellation number". I asked for an explanation, and the person on the phone repeated herself without any real information. I am a receptionist at a clinic, and I told her that I did not have any authorization capabilities. This repeated several times until she hung up on me due to my constant refusal.

    tl;dr: SCAM SCAM SCAM.

they are scamming you to cancel an ad you never had in the first place.  Then they send you a bill for the non-existent ad.   THEY ARE NOT THE REAL YELLOW PAGES

The cancellation authorizartion is so they can record you and edit the recording so it sounds like you agreeing to pay the bill they are about to send you

16 Ways You Can be Phone Scammed

7.Free Listing at Yellow Pages:  This scam targets businesses. The caller says that he is from Yellow Pages and is calling to update their records. He proceeds by asking to confirm some basic information such as owner’s name, business phone number, address, and company name. Then they start billing the victim and only then the business owner realizes that it’s not a free listing and it was not Yellow Pages directory that called.

The victims report that when they call to complain, the company plays the recorded conversation with the victim saying 'Yes' except that the caller is reading from a completely different script. The scammers replace one side of the conversation, making it sound as if the business owner agreed to a paid listing and a monthly fee.

A woman with a very thick Indian accent called here telling us that she had spoken with the owner of the company and that the owner had requested a cancellation confirmation.  He did not speak with them, nor did he request cancellation.  We have never had an online yellow page listing with this company.  She tried to tell me that this would avoid a $520.00 renewal charge and that she had to transfer me to the cancellation department.  And that the people in this department were not able to answer questions because they were reading from a script.

I told her that we never had an online listing with them or anyone else to renew or cancel, that she nor anyone else had ever talked to the owner and that if we heard from them again the next person they would be talking to is our lawyer and further I'd report them to the FCC.  I told her goodbye and hung up.

Yea, I keep getting calls from these people.  If you say anything other than "yes" or "no" in their recordings, they have to start all over.  I kept saying I wasn't authorized, they could send me the bill but I wasn't paying for it.  They keep calling and calling.

Finally I cussed them out and have been hanging up on them.

Glad I found this site after I searched for the phone number.

    Scam.

These people called my work 4-5 times and tried to get me through the whole recording process. I finally said that they have me on recording saying no I do not authorize this invoice. He then told me that he would send the invoice to me twice, and that he would report me to the BBB, I better not get any invoice from them because I did not agree to anything. Hopefully I do not.

    SCAM ALERT!
I received a call from 1-409-291-5191, Beaumont, TX showed on the caller ID. A woman with a very strong accent identified herself as being with The Yellows Pages and she needed my authorization to cancel my advertising so  I would not be charged. It sounded like a scam right from the start of the phone call.  As I pressed her for more specific information so I could buy time to Google her phone number and confirm my suspicion, she kept repeating the purpose of her call rather than make any effort to answer my questions. After I repeated that I wasn't authorizing anything without confirming evidence of an account their "company", she abruptly hung up.

This company identified themselves as Yellow Pages Public.  They are nothing but a bunch of scam artists.  They are not the real yellow pages and there scam is to get you to agree to continue your ad with them that is non-existent and then they bill you for it to the tune of hundreds of dollars.

I got a call saying that they were calling about a cancellation of my Yellow Pages ad. They were incredibly pushy & the lady I was speaking to could not speak very clear English. She tried to get me to authorize the cancellation in order to get a "cancellation number". I asked for an explanation, and the person on the phone repeated herself without any real information. I also asked if Mario my boss had authorized this cancellation, she replied yes. I am an Office Manager at a Roofing company, and I told her that I did not have time to be answering all her questions. She stated that I needed to complete the call with her Quality Control Department. This repeated several times until I hung up on her due to my phones ringing with potential customers.

I work for a small business and my company kept getting calls from Yellow Pages - they were quite pushy and called numerous people in my office trying to get someone to authorize the cancellation in order to get a "cancellation number".  My company was harassed for more than an hour until I got on the phone and told them that their scam was all over the internet and to stop calling...that seemed to have worked!

I reported them to the National Do Not Call Registry. I had the same issue that everyone above has had. Since I run two businesses, I have received the call for both from the same "yellow pages public" with the same scam.

Just received a call from (409) 291-5191. Asian-sounding man almost rude and demeaning to me. This is only my second day on the job, so I had no clue that this was a scam. My boss is moving his practice to another location, so I thought that maybe he did want to cancel the listing, as they were telling me. I told them I wasn't authorized to make any decision regarding the $599.99 bill, and that they should call back later to talk to my boss. They didn't say anything else, so I hung up the phone. The phone then rings about a minute later with the same man telling me that Mike (my boss) has already authorized this and that I should tell their quality control agent (who is Sabrina) that I am authorized for them to send an invoice. She was really nice and much more understandable and I really thought it was legitimate, so I said yes. I then looked up the number online and discovered that it was a scam. Is there anything I can do?

I've gotten the same call probably close to 50 times. I was so fed up with them calling me that I told him to put me thru to his manager. When he refused I called him a fu@kin' jackwagon and he got pissed off at me. It's funny to hear a oriental getting pissed off knowing that he was going all Hi-Karate on me thru the phone! Bahahaha, I highly recommend it!

Just received a call from this very same number.  The lady spoke very quickly telling me that we would be charged 599.99 and tried to give me a cancellation number - I stated I wanted to speak to a supervisor.  She stated that any action the supervisor could do, she could do.  I demanded a copy of the contract, she would not comply - finally put a man on the phone.  Still hard to understand - I stated I wanted to speak to someone who spoke and understood English.  He stated he did.  I said, no you do - if you did, you would know that this phone call is a scam.  Thankfully, I had quickly googled the number during the phone call and found it was a scam.  He quickly hung up.

Do not say yes to anything - do not say no to anything.  Terminate the phone call immediately.
