- ccm| 1 replyI received a cashier's check from Wells Fargo today with the phone number 480-394-3122 on the check. The letter enclosed said that they made a processing error during my auto loan refinancing and were refunding that error plus an additional amount for the inconvenience. I was instantly concerned because the last time I used Wells Fargo for anything was 21 years ago. I was worried someone was using my identity. I went to www.WellsFargo.com and found their contact number instead of calling the number on the check. It was indeed a refund for a banking error they made in 1999. The confirmed the account was long closed. They read off my address and phone number at the time. It's a legitimate check. Before you go straight to the garbage can with the check, call Wells Fargo and ask some questions.

- markisbossReceived "cashier's check" from "Wells Fargo Auto" today, same as others here. Mine was for "...review of the Wells Fargo Auto account related to the enclosed check, we determined that, due to internal error that occurred between March 18 1991, and March 15 2019, we incorrectly assessed a late charge(s) to...." for the amount of $58.36 - Problem with this is that that is a very long time period of almost thirty years and the check was made out to my wife that passed away 22 years ago. Also, it is stated that "As a result of at least one bankruptcy case filing that included the impacted account..." I never had a bankruptcy during her life. It is noted that for some reason, my deceased wife does have an active credit file. What I am wondering is how much info these scammer POS's already have on me. One thing for sure is that they don't have access to my bank info, that they would be able to get if I cashed this fake check.
- Caller: Fake Wells Fargo

- VickiI got a check also. Says it was refund of late fees on an auto loan from a bankruptcy in 1996. 73.00. Almost 25 years ago. Different name and moved many times since that time. This is definitely a scam. I ripped it up Why would they even track me down for 73.00. Be Careful people. I can’t believe people would call on this and give their SS#. I don’t NEED 73.00 that bad
- IrvingI got a call from this number. And I do not have an account with wells fargo or anything with them. So i don't know why they called me.
- Roni replies to mrs. mylesIt’s probably a scam. DONT DEPOSIT. Take it to a bank executive.
- RoniI did not receive a call. That number was written on the “cashier’s check” for inquiries. Googled their # and found out - FRAUD.
- Caller: Letter from “Wells Fargo”
- Cindy replies to Vanessa| 2 repliesIt's legit. An account was opened in error by a banker and it's a settlement cashier's check
- Dr. Sheldon Cooper replies to Cindy| 1 replyWhat makes you think Vanessa will read your post, she was here 7 years ago?
And yes, everybody said it's fake. - Steve M| 3 repliesI just called Wells Fargo Auto 1-888-753-3042 and verified that this is in fact a valid check for an over payment of late fees and they stated that they did not properly notify me within the allocated timeframe from Wells Fargo Auto. I thought it was a scam. I read Eric the check number and he verified the rest of the information for me. My name, what vehicle it was for and the exact amount of the check. He asked me why I was calling and I told him to make sure it was not a scam. Not all of them are scams, make some calls and have Wells Fargo Auto verify your information. Do not give them any of your personal information up front and see what happens. They can track by just the check number! Thank you.
- Tygerkat replies to Steve MOh, look! A shill! You have no logical reason to look up a known phone number so you must be here to shill.
- B-Edwards replies to Steve M
Want to try that in plain language and explain what it means? You need to find a better job than shilling for scammers.Quote:... for an over payment of late fees and they stated that they did not properly notify me within the allocated timeframe from Wells Fargo Auto.
Reading through posts going back to 2009 - many of them reading like Shill posts - I suspect the scam proceeds from the phone numbers that are supposedly printed on the checks. Those numbers and checks were also associated with CL scams. I am wondering if the posts here by shills were attempts to lend credibility to calls from this number and 2 other numbers mentioned in this thread.
This number - 800-642-4720 - is convincingly associated with a Wells Fargo Phishing scam, in post going back to 2007. https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-642-4720/11
It is worth noting that a couple of the posts use the more uncommon (480) 394-3122, rather than 480-394-3122, and others posts challenge other posts to call the FCC of all things. Those are the sort of errors that scammers from outside the US make.
I would be VERY careful about calls from or to phone numbers that are supplied with these unexpected windfall checks. - JillI got a cashier check for $ 50 for class action settlement from Wells Fargo. I closed the account 8 years ago, therefore, I knew it was fake, but had to google to see the phone number lead me to.
1-844-474-7995 = Chinese scammer
phone number in the check = 480-394-3122 with routing number 121000248 .
the placement of routing number was wrong.
case closed.- Caller: Wells Fargo

- mary| 1 replyi received a check today from wells fargo auto for a vehicle that was repossessed saying it was for fees they didn't notify us of. I called wells fargo auto and they confirmed that the check was legit that i was due these due to them not following the state guidelines at that time this was for a vehicle we had over 15 years ago. they verified all the details of the vehicle where it was purchased, purchase date and everything. They said if i still feel unsure to go to an official wells fargo bank so they can affirm that it was legit.
- Kat* replies to maryWow, you got a check and found out it "was legit" so you decided to rush right to a phone number look-up site to brag. Or shill. Yeah, i think shill. Because there is no logical reason whatsoever for you to come here since you allegednly already know to whom this phone number belongs.
- Lori in ColoradoI called Wells Fargo and they verified that the check this number is on is a real check. I called their number from their website, not the number on the check or letter, to verify it. :)
- Susan replies to Dr. Sheldon CooperIt's not fake though, they're having to pay out a ton of money for all sorts of scandals from fake accounts to overcharging, etc. It doesn't hurt to call before you just trash it, but do not call the number on the check/letter, call their customer service number to verify.
- It's legitI called Wellsfargo.com/help and they verified that the # on the check and letter is legit. The person at the Wells Fargo help desk even confirmed the names of whom I spoke when I did call the # on the check. Either way, sorry to disappoint the naysayers...it's legit.

- bg replies to JDI called Wells Home Mortgage and the check is legit. Apparently they charged (unlawfully) for rate extensions where settlement was delayed, they reviewed old accounts and are giving back the funds. I suspect all the fines had some restitution components.
- Julie Williams replies to Steve MThis information is very helpful because my husband and I received a check today and were also thinking that it was a scam.
