Received a call from this number saying that there was a problem with my Microsoft Windows computer. Asked him how he knows that and how he got my number. They promptly hung up.

This is a SCAM!  Never give your info.  This time it was an automated machine leaving a message saying it is the IRS and this is the last warning before they file a lawsuit against my employer.  First off, the IRS doesn't generally make calls to you but if they do they will ALWAYS state their name and what their IRS ID number is for you.  BTW, this is about the 3rd or 4th last warning call we've gotten as well.  So, so much for last warnings.  They are just trying to scare you.  I also received a call here from a different number with the same threat as someone wrote earlier about my computer having a serious problem and all my info will be out there.  Ah, no.  Microsoft does not call you and do these things either.  DO NOT EVER GIVE YOUR INFO TO ANYONE.  These are scams.  Unfortunately, I have not figured out how to get it to stop or where to report it to.

They left a pre-recorded message claiming to be the "IRS - Internal Revenue Service" they stated that they that they were filing a lawsuit against me I was to call back to get the file number. They directed me to call 253-656-5016 to obtain the case number. I'm sure they would have had me confirm a great deal of private information and tell me I needed to immediately wire money but I did not pick up the phone when I noticed it was an unknown number and I did not call them back. The caller may have faked (spoofed) the phone number but from what I see here it is unlikely. I reported the incident to http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml. This was the second call I received with the same scam. The first call came from 626-446-9137 and directed me to call 206-317-1651

I got a recorded call from this stating they were IRS and have been trying to get hold of me.  I believe they also gave another phone # to call.  Unfortunately, I didn't save message so am unable to add that other number.  This is NOT how IRS contacts us!

Yes, its a scam, they try to get onto your computer via networking and proceed to steal all your private data. Safe bet is to simply hang up.

This number has been reported as calls ranging from Microsoft assistance to Scam Collections to threats of IRS lawsuits in just over 2 years.. Folks, as a word of advice, when you punch in the number in this site's search and reports are posted under that number, please read through some reports from beginning to end. Many times it tells the story of how scammy the number really is.

My caller ID said this was a payphone.  A message was left stating they were from the IRS and it was urgent that we call them.  We do not answer calls from numbers we do not recognise since our name an number appeared in the caller Id.  Security from our service called it "call spoofing" and we should not answer numbers we do not recognise.

Left a message with the old IRS is filing a lawsuit against you scam.  Have gotten this scam from other phone numbers as well.  Didn't answer it, but they left a machine-voiced message.

I hate these unwanted canvas calls from telemarketers, politicians, non-profits and others.  I quickly learned that calls from certain area codes often belong to one of these catagories - especially 800 numbers.  I never used to be a grumpy phone person but I developed into one thanks to these unwanted calls.  So I have several ways of handling them now.

The one that works the best is look at the caller ID and if you don't recognize the number, pick up the phone and put it back down, hang up without a word.  Your number will go into a rotational redial and you will get another call at some time in the future.  Do the same thing the next time they call.  The biggest benefit of this is you don't get upset... ever find yourself cussing out a recorded message?  Makes you feel defeated, doesn't it?  Don't give them the satisfaction.

If you don't answer, they will simply call back later - I'm told these numbers are on a rotation and a human will only answer if you act interested in what they are saying.  If you don't answer, they will rotate your number and you will receive another call.  Unfortunately, there is no way to stop the calls entirely. If you give them ANY information at all they sell it and your calls triple.

If you do forget to check and answer and the caller speaks with an unfamiliar accent, know that our national banks and all kinds of companies now employ foreigners. I got a call that went like this:  "Hello Ms X, this is Sanjay calling from ABC Bank".  I don't want my bank calling me unless it is my branch manager or I am expecting their call.  I simply said, "I do not speak to strangers on the phone.  Have my branch manager call me if it is important and requires my immediate attention."  I called my branch manager just to be told, they do not 'canvas call' their customers.

I used to say, "please don't call me again, place this number on your do-not-call list".  Not now - now I check the phone ID, if I don't know who it is, I pick up the phone and click "end the call".  If they continue to call there is a limit your phone company (land line) will allow after that you can report them and the phone company will follow up and this is helpful if your blocked calls maximum has been reached or if you think you are being singled out or stalked.

Don't get verbally abusive!  They put you on a "special list" then and the calls will increase.  I always remind myself I am lucky not to have to work that job and that these callers are just trying to make a living.  They are often hired to do the calling and they may not get paid unless you buy.  The real criminals are the scam artists who hire uneducated, poor, unemployable, disabled people from the USA or foreigners to do the dirty work.   So I don't take out my frustration on them.  I know these crooks will get their due justice in time.

Fortunately for us, we have a hard to pronounce last name and human callers will ALWAYS mispronounce it.  I simply cut them off in a loud, authoritative voice say, "We are not interested.   Goodbye." and hang up - don't give them a chance to reply.

They WILL call back after they have gone through their lists of hundreds or thousands of other calls.  Remember to be good to yourself, look at the ID, if you don't recognize the number assume it is an unwanted call, pick up, hang up, forget about it.

P.S.  This was a computer scam canvas call.  If you use Skype or MagicJack or something similar where you get your calls through your computer, you will get more of these calls.  I have a private land line and still get the calls, but fewer with my land line.

2/18/2015 Came home - checked my caller ID and had the number listed. Since I have family in Nassau County, New York I called the number back.  On the third ring, the message said "The number you dialed is not in service."  Yet another SCAM!
Note: How I stopped SOLICITORS from making repeat calls to my house, I leave this message on my answering system: Thanks for calling 516-555-1212 (I say my real phone number), at the tone leave a message. If you are a solicitor, please hang up and call 516-212-5512 (I use a number that I know  is disconnected or you can use one of the solicitors numbers) for further instructions.  I DON'T GET RETURN CALLS FROM THE SAME SOLICITOR.....try it!!!
