Good advice!  But I don't believe these mailings from collections are legit either. Those letters are very vague--only provide a reference number & an alleged amount owed which virtually tells you nothing. So then they are aware were forced to call them & that's when they'll hope to get our personal info which is not needed in order to pay a bill. Their return addresses are not complete or unknown or PO boxes. Best to just go back & pay the original creditor because they never acknowledge they got the money so who knows who is really cashing the check or money order. Just look at your credit report & make determinations from that & dispute if not valid.

Well, the law states what must be in that letter, and it also states that your rights must be clearly posted in that letter.  If you follow the law, the debt collector must prove that you owe the debt and that they have the legal right to collect it.  If I follow your advice I would be doing a lot of work for nothing.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

You need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.

calls will become fewer until they stop. You may every so often receive a couple here and there but trust me this works. We are a law enforcement family & this voicemail has scared many criminals away :)

called me on my cell, sounded like he had a mouth full of glue when he said he had a call on hold for me, then he put me on hold and I hung up. I don't wait on hold except for a damn good reason and I sure don't wait on hold when I am the one being called!

Commonwealth. Bottom feeding, scum sucking, "debt collectors" who buy old debt for pennies on the dollar and then attempt to harass people into paying them.

Called me a while back, left a message asking about a relative. Since then calls almost daily. I have reported them to the CFPB at https://complaint.consumerfinance.gov

Never have a conversation.  Never even answer.

They called me in Orlando and I missed the call, so I called back a Mr Freeman answer, I said did you call this number,  he said I didn't but maybe someone else here did. I said what was your name and who is responsible for this office calling me, he said hold on. I was on hold for a few minutes and hung up. If they needed me they would have made me wait so long, but I think it's s scam. I out on my ads list

They called, asked for me,  when i said this is, they kept asking if I was Christy,  trying to get me to say yes... i understand that it is a collection agency but there are also scammers that try and get you to say yes so they have your voice recorded and use it for other purposes.
