- HA HA HA| 3 repliesThey called, asked me if I was so and so, I thought too myself this smell like students loans. I said they had the wrong number, he repeated the number, I said correct number wrong person. Then I went on this site and my impluse was right, [***].
- Wondering replies to HA HA HAHA HA HA,
Why are they A**HOLES if you don't pay back your student loan? Maybe our country wouldn't have such a huge debt if some of you paid back what was lent to you. Would you not be angry if your employer didn't pay you your salary? Think about it. - jeffwyegJust got a call from this number as well. It IS from CRA regarding Student Loans in arrears (usually so far in arrears that they are now collecting on it). Turned out they were looking for someone with THE SAME NAME as me who works at THE SAME COMPANY as me - just a different location (however, that location's calls are handled by my location's receptionists). The person they were looking for also spells his first name differently from me.
Called CRA back at 1-800-661-5991 and got it all cleared up.- Call type: Debt collector

It would seem to me that you were the jerk that is not paying back what you were lent. Pay your loan jerk!!!!!!!! - KeithThis appears to be a Debt Collector for Canada Student Loans. My question is can they garnish my wages?
- Caller: CRA?
- Call type: Debt collector
- jellis19this is, as stated before, the CRA. they ask for SIN to verify that you are who it is they are looking for. they called me and before giving them any information they new the time/date that i applied for and received my loan as well as the total debt left. if there are any privacy concerns, simply ask them to send you an update of your loan status by post. but i would not recommend ignoring these calls, they are from the collections branch of the CRA. it is wiser to come to an agreement with them than wait until they take 30% of your paycheque, freeze/seize your accounts, or both.

- yabba dabba replies to Big Hthe only time you ever need to produce your sin number is for revenue canada, banks ask for it however they can not demand it. i st up bank account with no sin card and as a matter of fact when yu set up bank account with sin card you are performign "legal joinder" between you the real person (upper case lower case letters) and the artificial person ( all upper case letters, whose name appears on teh sin card.) In reality and if peopel would take the time to research we voluntarily give our human rights away by signing documenets we never should and never have to.
- donnadefinitely CRA. This is the number that shows up when a friend of mine -- who works at CRA -- calls me (but it's their generic "outgoing" number). It's legit.
- Caller: Revenue Canada
- StevenI've read all the postings and understand where the call is coming from and why it's being made. However I don't have any student loans; never have, never will. I don't even owe any money on my income tax.
Very strange that I'd be getting a call like this. - Steven| 2 repliesFurther to my earlier postings I called 800.959.8281 and spoke to an agent. I gave her the phone number that we're all inquiring about and was told it didn't match anything she had. More so I was told if the CRA wanted to get a hold of me they would do so by mail and not phone. Since there was no note on my account regarding why I'd get this call, it might be a scam. Albeit a very well thought out scam since when you dial the number back it says "you've reached the local number for the CRA".
- TJ| 1 replyThey ask for your SIN to confirm your identity. This number is not a scam at all. They do not ask for SIN numbers anymore anyway. If they ask for you by name, then you owe the government money. Pay your bills people.
- Caller: CRA
- Sarah replies to StevenThank you Steven! This is the best reply I read. By calling the legit office and finding out this number is not one of theirs is pretty conclusive. This is definitely a scam so don't be fooled. I also was called but have no loans and am not from Canada. There is no reason for me to receive this call. They are fishing for infomation which, unfortunately it sounds from some of the replies, they received. Never give out SIN or SSN or anything else over the phone. Period.
- MoFoGovernment of Canada Payroll Dept. Looking for payroll payments for employees. If you have not paid them, they will decide what you owe and bill you then call you to pay up. They make it official like you have to pay them because they are the government, and it is debt you owe them. The gov't hires tons of people to collect your money so they can pay there over priced salaries, so the real corruption comes from them but they make it like it is you who are the bad guys. Someone has to make a bill to take away this authoritarian power they seem to wield over our population, and this number is one that you will not like to take.

- Not Getting ScammedI received a call from this number. Sounded fishy to me. I called my father who just retired from the CRA and he said it was a bunch of bull. The caller had left me a voicemail with a file number. He said their case files do not come in the 9 digit format that they provided.
- moon| 1 replyI called 1-800-O-Canada - and asked them if the 1-800 number they were giving out was legit. The person on the other end told me that it was not a CRA phone number. This is a scam.

"Should taxpayers have any concerns, they may verify the authenticity of a 1-800 CRA telephone number by calling 1-800-O-Canada (1-800-622-6232). Should taxpayers wish to verify the authenticity of a regular (not a 1-800) telephone number for the CRA, they should contact the CRA directly by using the numbers that can be found at Contact Us at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/cntct/phn-eng.html. For business-related calls, contact 1-800-959-5525 and for individual concerns, contact 1-800-959-8281." - froggies replies to moonit is not a scam, call the CRA student loan call centre at 1-866-864-5825 (which is on google and is legit) and ask them what is the number to be referred to in order to speak to a collection officer. They will give this number.
- NM replies to StevenI asked the caller for a number I could call back and she gave me 1-866-864-5825. When I got an agent she told me that there was no file pending for me. She said that they would never call and ask for your SIN and that they have it in front of them when they call you. She checked a couple of times and said there was no reason for them to reach me.
- LexSo what is it then?? Seems like it has been going on for a few years if it is. This is a scam or it is not, it can't be both.... SO either it is a scam and there are people on here trying to help that scam along, or its not. If those of us with loans out there know it, then like some people here said, call the legit number and check, I know I will. Whether or not I owe money, I have never recieved a call like that, at work too?? Seems fishy but I will call Revenue tomorrow to find out for sure. Since there are no posts back letting us know for sure, I will repost when I find out.
