    I just got a call from this number "+1 (604) 691-4994
British Columbia, Canada" and I normally don't answer numbers I'm not familiar with so I simply ignored. I then googled the number and it led me to all sorts of forums and people stating it's the CRA.
What is the number ? I dont owe anything, I'm not in school at the moment so why have they called me ? They left NO voicemail.

    Really? replies to Not understanding
CLEARLY you came on this website because you are the jerk who is ALSO not paying back your student loan........or did they call the wrong number.........hahah stop trying to be something you are not.  We all have hard times - including me who is on disability and cannot give the CRA $500/month.  But yes it is student loans and they ask you to call the number 1-800-661-5991.

    I called back
It is the CRA collecting for student loans and I belive if you do not have any it is for "overpayment/underpayment" of something.  They make you tell them all your info. including who you bank with [at which point I laughed and said you are calling me why do you need this info.], they said it was the last question and I laughed and said I am not telling you, you can find out instantly if you wanted too.  She then asked how can I help you?  I said I am returning a call and then again she asked how can I help you?  I think they try to trick you into folding because even I was scared when I called.  I do not have money to pay and am on disability - I think the agent was very nice to me because I knew what I was talking about because they tryed to trick me in revealing my husbands income [BUT it is my student loan] so I did not tell them, I was then asked to "send it in" HAHA which I replied saying it was my student loan and his income does not matter; she then offered to deffer after I kept repeating I have no income and cannot get any but when I did have it I paid every month on time the amount they asked me too and that I even had $2000 of my taxes taken for my student loans 1 year ago.

    Awesome
Ya, the call was from Revenue Canada about student loans. It was not a scam, they gave me information that I had only previously given Canada Revenue. Wasn't anything bad... A receipt or something they sent my house got rejected and sent back to them by the post office due to the postal strike.

I just got a call from this number......I am NOT a student, I have no children in college.....never got a student loan when they did go to college......so where did they get my number, and why were they calling.....the NEVER leave messages when they call......
I am also in Ontario.....this is a BC number.....
as a past employee of Canada Revenue, I can tell you that there are Taxation Centres and small City wide District Offices everywhere......therefore a person in Ontario for example should be getting a call from someone in their area.....not the other side of the country......

This is legit. They will always ask you for you SIN # to locate your account info. It's not like the person calling you knows it's you. The calls are made by a machine and then routed to a person who isn't on the phone at the time. If you have an account with CRA you will realize that if you are paying your student loan that ALL letters you receive have your SIN as your account #. Also, if you pay with your online banking your account you pay to is your sin+YY on the end of it. Although it's really stupid to ask for such a personal thing if you have any sort of student loan you should probably give it to them so you can talk to them about your debts. Or ignore them till they just start taking it from your pay check....

Yep, I wished I'd googled this page before giving out all my personal information.  The lady sounded like Jeff Spiccoli - they kept having to put me on hold and couldn't give me any info but they asked a lot and like a fool I gave it out.   She even asked if I had call display lol.  GC

These posts are all over the place.  Final word is.....it is legit.  Sorry if this now makes you anxious, but, it is part of the CRA's Debt collection for "Social Development Canada" (CRA's words).  The 604 691 4994 number is not on their general directory but is on their collection's directory.  We also got the dreaded message on our machine with the 1 800 661 5991 call back number.  I told the person on the other line that we do not have any debts and certainly no student loan debts (since we are in our 50s.)  She said we can call the "individual concerns, contact 1-800-959-8281 number" (which you can verify on the "Beware of fraudulent communications") web page and they will tell you if you have anything owing and they will tell you to call the number to address the issue for which they called you.  Before you give them your SIN number; you can always ask them to verify who they are by asking them if they have the line 150 amount from your notice of assessment from the previous year.

    Hope this helps

The CRA will ask for your SIN # when verifying identity with those that have not set up online accounts. That is standard but they don't usually call people unless they are returning your call.

The number is legit.  I called the National Student Loan Service Centre (from the number, on their website) to deal with my loans.  They forwarded me to CRA, who then gave me that number to contact.  It's a resolution department.

I got a call from this number this morning.  I was working so I didn't see that they were calling me on my cell phone.  They didn't leave a message.  I have student loans but I pay every month faithfully although when I initially graduated I had a horrible time finding work and eventually defaulted on my loans.  I actually just called student loans yesterday to change my mailing address with them, so this call must be in regard to that.  Not everyone is a loan skipper but it can definately be paralysing to see an amount owed in the tens of thousands when you've just graduated and are not earning much.  Entry level jobs don't pay nearly enough to satify the repayment demands of students loans.  Anyone here who says "pay your student loans you jerk" has clearly had a different experience in life and needs to admit that they haven't walked a mile in someone else's shoes.
