    Old Couple:
They call everybody and anybody to scam them out of money. They don't care if you owe anybody any money or not.  SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. We keep records of their  calls which amount to Harassment by communications. Next time I see my lawyer I will have him make a complaint for me. Most of the people if not all that they harass don't owe them any money. They are just looking to scam money out of anybody. Document all their calls.

Received this call at 10:40am Eastern today.  Didn't answer. Yet another # for Portfolio Recovery- they've been trying to collect on an old utility bill debt my ex-husband owes. Had a conversation with one of Portfolio's reps a couple months back & tried to reason with them, explaining that the debt was incurred after our divorce was final & that pursuant to our decree he was liable for debts at the old apartment.  Asked lady if she could establish when this debt was allegedly incurred- even tho I KNEW the answer...and of course she didn't have that info. All logic failed.  "I'm sorry, ma'am.  We don't honor divorce decrees."  I sighed, said, "Too bad. Well then it sucks to be Portfolio, doesn't it?" and hung up.  Never tried to talk to them again; they don't care & will try anything to collect their accounts.

Since this call was on my iPhone, I got an app called "Blacklist" and have since put all the numbers in the database that Portfolio tries to call me from.  Blocks their calls.  Aaaaaahhhh....peace. :-)

I just got a call from this number a few minutes ago on my cell phone.  I don't answer numbers I don't recognize and rejected the call then came here.  Like others, they're trying to collect on a debt from well over 10 years ago.

my credit report is absolutely clean. i am positive because I just refinanced my house and got up to date report from the 3 credit bureaus. All 3 rate me over 800. I have not used a capital one card in over 8 or 9 years. I have been getting thes bogus calls for months now. I have told them to stop calling me.  Yesterday they called and mentioned Capital one. I was irritated and I told the caller to get a real job and to go to hell. I always assumed it was some scam. I assume they call hundreds of people hoping to engage nieve people in conversation and get personal info on them. I would be happy to sue but $1,000 is hardly even worth the effort. I would be even more happy to see these people prosecuted.

The statute of limitations in Texas is 4 years. And it is not 4 years from the charge off. It is the DLA "date of last activity", which usually means 90 days delinquency. These people can  call all they want, but it is dangerous to answer and speak to them. You can very possibly start the statute of limitations over if you are on the line as far as the amount of years. I was unfortunately scammed by a company that hired an aggressive law firm. The debt in question turned out not to be mine, but I now have a summary judgement against me and must pay them the debt plus 5% interest annually on unpaid balance. They get $1 per month from me in the form of a money order. Educate yourself in your state. Many consumer law attorneys will offer you a free consult and answer your questions.

Be sure to ignore all calls from Portfolio Recovery. They call from hundreds of different numbers. They are low-life collectors of ancient debts which they have purchased from the original creditor for pennies on the dollar. Such debts are almost always beyond the statute of limitations, have been written off by the real creditor, and cannot be collected, but it is important not to talk to these people at all. You do not want to give them any ammunition, and they do not believe you when you tell them the debt is not yours. So just let the phone go to voice mail, then delete the message. Run the number through this site to learn who is calling, if you're not sure.

From their website: "If you’ve received a Portfolio Recovery Associates (PRA) collection letter or collection call, you may wonder what to expect and what to do next.

The first thing that you should know is that we will listen to you. The more we know about your situation, the more we can help you. If you’ve lost your job or had unexpected medical bills, we will attempt to work out comfortable terms for repaying us.

Portfolio Recovery Associates is a debt collection company that makes money by helping its customers resolve their debts. In these difficult economic times, we know that many people are willing to pay their debts, but cannot do so all at once. The more people we help by providing repayment programs to relieve financial burdens, the more successful we are as a company. In short, it’s in our best interest, as well as yours, to seek repayment based on your ability to pay.

Portfolio Recovery Associates receives hundreds of letters from people thanking us for how we helped them settle their obligations. A woman in California, for example, told us she received better customer service from Portfolio Recovery Associates than from stores where she commonly shops. One man with health problems thanked us for not making him feel like a failure as Portfolio Recovery Associates worked out an appropriate payment plan.

One woman wrote to a supervisor at Portfolio Recovery Associates, confiding that she actually started crying because she was treated so well. Another woman thanked us for the “valuable information” we provided. Many have told us how relieved they felt to pay off their debt.

These are the voices of people we’ve helped. They represent the truth about Portfolio Recovery Associates.

If you feel that you have been contacted by us in error, please contact us immediately by filling out this form."

What a JOKE!!!!  These people are rude!!! and not helpful and call at all hours of the day.

This is Portfolio Recovery. I am disputing their claim and now I am getting calls from them. Smart to use non-800 numbers. Problem is they are using Virginia ACs and I know no one there.
