- James King| 10 repliesA Chinese guy called, first in English, and then switched to Mandarin, about a denied claim. He said that I had bought their insurance in April, and had the appendectomy in China (really??) in May and filed a claim with them, which is ridiculous, I haven't traveled out of the US for over 10 years. I didn't buy their insurance nor apply for it, and he transferred the call to his "supervisor" to talk to me. This was a scam call!

- RT replies to James KingI received the same call for the same reason. Gotta be scam.
- Donna| 2 repliesI received four calls today from a number where the caller claimed to be from United Health Care. When I spoke in Chinese, he switched to Chinese as well. Typically, an insurance company would use an interpreter for non-English speakers. He wanted to verify my name and birthdate because he was checking an insurance claim for an appendectomy on May 30th, which I never had. He suggested that someone might be using my identity and warned me about serious fraud.
I told him he should have his company's legal department investigate and send me a copy of the claim. He asked me what action will I take on my end. I said I would report the issue to the police, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the major credit reporting agencies. He then claimed he couldn’t email me the documents because they had been passed down from his manager and no PDF copy was available. When I asked him to scan and email the papers, his attitude shifted, and he said it was against company policy and privacy rules to email them.
I argued that if it’s about my credit and identity, that shouldn’t be the case. He then insisted I visit his office in Queens, New York, to see the documents. I told him I don’t live in New York, and when he asked for my address, I became even more suspicious. I said I would send someone to pick up the documents, and he suddenly changed the subject, focusing on how serious the fraud was. I told him I was not interested and hung up on him. He stopped calling then.
Theses are the red flags that suggest this was indeed a scam:
*Legitimate companies generally don’t repeatedly call without prior communication or clear context. They would usually start with a formal letter or official email.
*Scammers often switch languages or use them inappropriately to make you feel more comfortable or manipulate you.Scammers often create a sense of urgency or panic, trying to get you to act quickly without thinking. Legitimate companies typically follow up through formal channels and allow time for responses.
*Genuine insurers will not ask for sensitive information like your Social Security number or date of birth over the phone, especially in an unsolicited call.
*Legitimate organizations have established procedures for providing documentation they will not ask you to visit in person for such matters.- Caller: United Health care

- 7122LDefinitely spam.
Man spoke Mandarin and claimed to be UHC Chinese Support Department which was as fishy as it could get.
He knew my name but nothing else as it seemed. He claimed I had a claim with a local hospital in China. I said I never had any. He then said that might be a spam and wanted me to cooperate with their investigation.
I replied I would contact UHC myself at a more convenient time and hang up.- Caller: UnitedHealthCare

- Dave| 1 replyThey're scammers who told my wife in Chinese they were United Health Care and she must sign paperwork/send passports because of an investigation.. They scared her by fake transferring her to a video call with "Chinese police" and later had her on Skype and Zoom and told her to message them every couple hours that she was safe. Their follow-up scam call was planned on the next day but she told me before and I showed her it was a scam. I am taking care of it now (file police reports, replacement IDs, etc).
