No one is on the SS switchboard except for their employees.  You don't seem to know anything do you?

When you call SS and ask for a callback they record your name and then when they call you back they play that recording so that you know it is them.  So I guess you did "mess up".  I would suggest that you look up the FTC website on identity theft and follow those directions.

First got an email about Social Security, even had wrong last name on it, I called the Social Security number I have always used, and spoke to someone stating there is nothing wrong with my Social Security, then I got a call from this number, I looked online and IT IS a scam number. I answered and they asked for my information, I told them I am at Social Security right now straightening everything up. This person got rude and hung up. SCAMMER. When I was at the Social Security office, they stated there is ONLY an 800 number that they will EVER call you from.

IF you call SSA and ask for a call back - - they will ask for a LOT of info before they look into your acct.  And yes, the SS number is one of the things they ask for.

If you call and ask for a callback they record you saying your name so that when you answer the call you will hear you saying your name and know that it is them.  If you don't hear that then it is not them, especially if they right away start asking for all that information.

Obviously it wasn't since you didn't hear the recording of your name at the beginning of the call.  If you did then there was no reason to look the number up.

Not sure how someone could "catch" a check but I know that isn't the truth since SSA does not issue checks anymore.  It either has to be direct deposit to a bank or to their approved debit card.

I was waiting for a call back from Social Security. This number called me saying it is Social Security. The girl asked all my information and told me to wait, that she is fixing something on her phone. After a while she hung up. I called back and a message told me my call cannot be completed as dialed. That is when I looked up this number and found all these comments about this number which is obviously a scam number.

You didn’t screw up. I called my local Social Security office and was told that I could stay on hold or they can call back. This was the number that called back. They had my info. I went to Social Security office, following day, to pick up requested letter I was told about, on phone. They were expecting me so my actual agent time (at the window) was about three minutes.

Exactly. I just received the document I requested, from them, to the address they had on record. Definitely in an official SSA envelope and is identical to the letter I picked up at the local SSA office (that I needed a bit sooner).
