Same story as "fishie - 16 Oct 2008" above - paper letter with B/W logo. When I called using their customer service # direct from the web, they did verify that the 800-239-7054 was a legit fraud number.

They offered me to fax the original letter to check it, I will do that.

If this is a scam, it's the most elaborate scam of the century.  The recordings seemed to be exactly what one would expect when calling a large corporate call center.  The rep on the other end knew that I gave her an incorrect email address when she was verifying my identity, and she clearly was verifying information that could only have been obtained from a ChoicePoint file or something beyond a typical credit report.  She ended the call by telling me that she was unable to verify my id from the questions she was asking and told me I would have to appear in person at a bank to activate my credit card... strange, yes, but she clearly knew what information I did (and didn't) give Cap One in my application.

Just got off the phone with Capital One fraud department, 800-239-7054 IS a valid number.  They put a hold on my card prior to me even trying to activate it, this is a very strange way of doing things in my opinion but after SEVERAL calls to different Capital One numbers listed on the website and even the activation number I beleive that this is a valid number and NOT a scam.

I received a voicemail from a man named Chris that said he was from the Capital One fraud protection department, and that I needed to call 800-239-7054 ASAP. I recently made changes on my account (last name, home address, new photo on card), but over a month ago, and I've used my card since then. I called the number on the back of my card, and after a lot of automated prompts and a representative that couldn't help me, I was passed on to a 'Senior Account Manager'. 20 minutes, some personal security questions, some additional verifications, and my account was cleared. I didn't have any fraud - they froze my account to verify my changes. They tell me my account is now cleared. She did not address the voicemail or the phone number, however. But, my account is clear and good - they were wanting to get a hold of me. Just always use the number on the back of your card, or verify on their website first. There is fraud out there, but sometimes they just want to check in and verify stuff with you too.

We received phone call from Cap One saying that someone out of the country had posted fraudulent charges to our account & said to give 800-239-7054 a call when the charges posted on our account online.  I called that number & they sounded very unprofessional.  Crystal asked for my full account number, dob, name & other info for verification.  I didn't give my full account number.

Then she transferred me to Fred who was in the fraud specialist dept.  He kept asking me for all of the details on the fraudulent charges.  Shouldn't he have already known the details?!  He was very casual & said they would mail out a letter to complete the process.  It sounded too fishy though.

I immediately called the number on the back of my card to verify that phone number (800-239-7054) & they said it was legit.  They are just extremely unprofessional!

I, too, received a msg on my answering machine to return a call to 800-239-7054, which I did the following day.  After I gave them the requested account no., dob and last 4 digits of SSA, I became suspicious.  It all was so poorly handled.  My husband looked up the phone number and came across this blog.  After hanging up, I called the no. on the back of the card, and, after speaking with one rep., she transferred me to their fraud div.  The person I spoke with there was amazingly unprofessional and unhelpful; HOWEVER, it was established that the first call was, indeed, legitimate.

Bottom line is that the 800-239-7054 no. is valid call.  It is just that, as another blogger put it, Capital One appears to do business in an extremely unprofessional fashion.

I received a voice message from Capital One Fraud Protection on Monday 12 April 2010 requesting me to call them back at 1-800-239-7054.  My Caller iD showed they called from 877-885-6102 ((UNAVAILABLE).  Even though I do not have a Capital One Credit Card account, I returned the call on Thursday 15 April. I was asked for my social security number.  When I only offered the last four digits of that number, I was told that they needed the full number to check if someone had made an application for a Capital One Credit Card using this number.  I then gave her the full number and she reported that someone was indeed making an application. On request, I then gave her my home address and birth date.  The birth date matched with the application but the address was different. She could not disclose this address to me. She stated that the application would be denied.

Needless to say, this caused me considerable concern.  I then called Capital One Customer Service and by-passed the immediate request for my 16 digit account number by repeatedly pressing "00".  After explaining what had happened, I was transferred to a specialist, who to my great relief verified that 1-800-239-7054 is a valid Capital One Fraud Protection number.  That specialist also verified that there was an application for a Capital One credit card using my identification, except the address. She gave me the numbers of three credit card bureaus to call if I wanted to hire their services to block any credit transactions using my identification. She also said that she could not give me the address of the offender, but if I filed a complaint I could give the agency the Capital One number 1-800-215-1921 that would cooperate with their investigation. I will definitely file a complaint with the FBI.

This is definitely not a legitimate number. I called Capital One and they looked up the number and did not have any record of it. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBER

My parents (?) got a call from this number shortly after I applied for a capital one credit card. They told them it was because they detected suspicious activity, but when I called them back it was to verify that I was actually the one who applied for the card.

Unprofessional sounding, yes. But not a fraud. They sent me this number in one of their emails.

Also think about it.. There's been reports on this thread about this number for three years now with a bunch of people claiming to have reported it to the FBI. Well here it is, 3 years later, and the FBI hasn't shut it down yet. Wonder why? The FBI doesn't just sit on this kind of stuff for 3 years.

    Because it's legit.

Recieved a call from this number, claiming to be Capital One Fraud Protection.  I had recently applied for a card and had also recently switched addresses.  I wasn't asked for my SS number, only for the answer to security questions (issuing state for SS number and year of car I drive).  Seemed legit and was over without any trouble.

I found this to be a valid number after calling Cap One. Everyone I talked to was professional and business like. They didn't do any needless butt kissing. Maybe those that said they were unprofessional were looking for a butt smooch or two. I just personally don't need the extra validation. I appreciate the fact that Cap one wanted and felt they needed the extra validation. .. Thanks Cap One

Received a call from "Unknown" on my iPhone. I let it go to voicemail. They said to call back at 800-239-7054. They provided a 14-digit "Case Number" after stating that there was some suspicious activity on card ending in ****.

What's funny is that I just applied for a capital one card over the weekend and haven't even received my card yet. Smells like fraud to me.

These scammers are basically looking to get your credit card # and your SSN. Do not give it to them if you get a call inbound (going TO your phone). The scammers have likely spoofed their # to appear legit coming from the Capital One Fraud Department. If you call the # on the back of your card going outbound, you should be safe.

    hey everyone,

this IS a legit capital one number (1-800-239-7054). i got a phone call and a letter directing me to this number. i had just requested a credit card online and had received it in the mail. i called this number first and when they asked me for information, i felt unsafe so hung up. i then called the capital one number on the back of my card. they did tell me there was a hold on my card and then transferred me to those exact same people. i talked to them and they asked for my full name, birthdate, last 4 of SSN, what car i drove, what state issued my SSN. they NEVER asked for my credit card number or my full SSN.

I got the same guy calling my hose for the past 2 weeks. I originally called capital the general number and they couldn't find anything on the number or my record. Then I called the Fraud dept directly and gave them the reference number I had ask for over the phone. Turns out this is legit. There was suspicious activity and someone from another state was trying to open a card with my info. [***]!!! So yeah, it helps to check with capital one. NEVER give out your SSN over the phone and always ask for a reference number.

My husband received a call from this number asking to call them back about some fraudulent activity. I checked the Capital One site itself and this number is listed under their Fraud Protection department. It is most definitely a legit number.

Before I used my CapitalOne, I called to activated it.  I used it on a Saturday.  Sunday they called my home phone and their agent butchered my name so bad that my wife said that no one lives here by that name.  When I setup my online profile with CapitalOne, I found out they had placed a restriction on my new CC.

I called the number on the back of their CreditCard about it.  Besides being on hold for most of the time, the person I was eventually transferred to was giving me the run around and would not tell me what I needed to do to lift the restriction.  So I hung up on the person.  I called the next day and I finally got to a person who told me that I needed to go to a bank and show that bank a government ID and have that bank call them at 800-239-7054 to verify that I am not impersonating myself.

    SO MUCH for NO-HASSLE!!!
