It is Capital One Bank Fraud Department verifying identity of the applicant of a credit card. They did drill me with security questions like a cross-examiner. Once my identity was proven, everything was fine. Although it was difficult to understand them (on my voice mail and on the phone).

I received a call from 800-239-7054 Capital One Fraud Dept--A few days after receiving my new Capt one business card. They wanted the entire card # last 4 digits of the social & date of birth. They said there were some concerns... Then they placed me on hold and came back with 3 more questions--- name one of 3 vehicles I had purchased, which state was my SS number issued in and did i apply for a credit card. After answering the questions, they released the hold and activated the card.

Phone message that said to call this number.  I called & was told someone was trying to apply for a Capital One credit card in my name.  I was given a very long case number.  Unfortunately I did verify a little bit of information before I thought to check the Capital One website for the phone number.  I don't think it was enough to help anyone with fraud but I am worried.

I received the same call and I was skeptical because I was just approved for a Capital One credit card but I haven't received it in the mail yet so I didn't think someone could have stolen my card or obtained my information so I thought they wanted me to call them back on the number to phish for my information. When I called they asked for my ENTIRE social security number so I immediately said "No thanks I'll wait until my card arrives." Usually credit card companies can verify your ID with just the last 4 digits. If this is to verify your identity then when you receive your card in the mail there should be a sticker on it with a number to call to activate your card. It will probably be the same number. I DO believe this is a legitimate Capital Fraud Protection number because it is listed on the Capital Website. However, I was a little skeptical especially since they wanted my whole SSN. If not then it used to be a Capital One fraud number but no longer in service for them and a fraud company decided to use it and Capital One hasn't updated their website. The best bet is for everyone to just call the number on the sticker placed on the card in the mail.

On 1 March Jeanie called from 1-800-239-7094 (accordning to the caller-id) supposedly from Visa Capitol1 re: credit card giving  4 digits from a card from a different bank.  The call was made to my home phone located in a state on the east coast not to the phone number where I am on the west coast.  Therefore, I learned about this call in May.  I called the number shown on the caller-id and received this message: Talk to Fun people at 800-24-4400.  I have cancelled my newly issued CAP1 card.  My app for the card did not show  the number that was called so from where did it come?  Perhaps one of the 3 credit bureaus?????.
I did not query 1-800-239-y054 I queried 1-800-239-7094 and look here comes this site.... Perhaps this should be reported not only to Capitol 1 but the three credit bureaus and also the Federal Trade Commission.

This has always been a shady banking institution. Even the legitimate bank regularly engages in predatory lending practices.   NO legitimate bank will ask for a complete social security number regardless of what is being wriiten here. I should know, I am a loan officer at one of the largest banks in the U.S.

I believe this is just a scam. I don't even have a Capital One card. I think it's just another way of trying to get you to tell these scammers your SS#. If these credit card companies were really concerned about your business they'd do a better job of putting security measures into place that actually work. And if I'm correct, credit card companies usually don't make it their business to call you when they suspect fraud. They usually just lock your card account and then wait for you to find out that your card can't be used. That way you will be sure to call them.

That's what happened to me when I went out of town once. I bought a lot of items in one place. And since it was out of state my cc company locked my account cause they suspected fraud. So when my wife went to use her spouse card in our home area she found out she couldn't. So she had to call customer service and find out why and get the account reopened.

Lesson learned: if you're ever traveling outside of your current residential city, esp out of state, be sure to notify your cc company of where and when you'll be traveling. Or face your wife's wrath when she calls you. lol

NOT legit! Credit card companies do not call you about suspicious activities on your card. They lock it down til you find out and call customer service to find out why.

Always use the # on the back of your card to get in contact with customer service if you have any issues with your card.

I was freaked out too at first but this is a ligitimate number. It's listed on their website. Just go to the capital one website and click contact us and then click credit cards. All of their numbers are listed and this one is under fraud protection.

It's legit, but they do everything possible to make it appear un-legit: fake-looking letterhead, foreign customer service agents you can barely understand (or maybe this makes it sound more legit), they ask for the last 4 of your SS#, which seems crazy--but it's legit. I gave the case number from the letter & they had the info. I also went to experian and saw that, in fact, someone had tried to open a Capital One cc in my name, over a few days, actually, so I'm glad I called the number right away and got it reported as fraud. Also filed a fraud report with the credit reporting agencies.

I have received several calls from this number over the past few months. Today I called it back. The system said it was "Capital One". They asked for the extension number of my representative. Since I did not have a rep or a capital one card I waited for someone to answer. I asked them to remove me from their calling list. They told me someone had tried to open an account and they wanted to make sure I had applied. They put me on hold, gave me a long case number. I even got a call from them when I was talking to them. The message they left then said to call with the case number and they were concerned someone had tried to open an account in my name. They suggested I call the 3 credit bureos and have a fraud alert on my credit. So, I called Capitol One. The told me they would not make this type of call. I gave them the 800 number that called me and they said they were going to turn the information to their management. So, bottom line... It's a Fraud!

This is NOT Capital One's fraud department. They're phishing for credit card numbers--do NOT give them your number if they call you. Instead, hang up, call the number on the back of your actual card, ask to be transferred to the fraud department and REPORT THEM.

Fake reports on this site saying it is legit.

    THEY ARE LYING !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there. I received a call from the same nos 1-800-239-7054 and I had the same feeling regarding legit or not and the reason is that their customer service people are not upto our standard , was nervous and he said it was a delicate matter so needed to verify my info. I was not ready to give any numbers if he asked other than last 4 digits. Found out their call center is in san jose costa rica. Hence the accent and the nervousness probably due to lack of training. And the question was legit , did not ask for any personal data than necessary. Yes I was on the alert.
Have to say capital one has been hiring cheap untrained labor. The last call I made to them directly  I talked to the customer service rep and she did not know the meaning of "Expedite" my card, she had a latin american accent and was not very professional either. Service sucks in this economy!

Wow... so they may not have the best customer service based on some of these posts, but this is a capital one number... heck, even googling the number you get the capital one website:

    http://www.capitalone.com/contactus/personal_accounts/credit_cards/index.php

Look at the second number under fraud protection...
