I received a call from "Julie" with Capital One stating that they were leaving a message for someone who might be related to me (they gave my dad's name in the message) I called the number they left which as 800-239-7054 and it turned out it was Capital One's Fraud Department. I was skeptical so I went to CapitalOne.Com and on their "Contact Us" link, they do list 1-800-427-9428 and 1-800-239-7054 as their contact number to their Fraud Department. In this case, this is legit. Still be careful.

Got the same message.  I don't have a capital one card.  Called capital one via the phone number on their web site as I did not trust this number.  Someone had filled out an application with my informaton but a different address.  Now I'm calling the police to report fraud.  I also called credit reporting agencies and had them mark my account as having a fraud alert placed against the number.

I received a voicemail message today from "Capital One" about "suspicious" charges on my card w/ account # ending in ___________ and to call back at 1-800-239-7054 with the case # they provided to me.  I'd say the charges are quite suspicous, considering the fact that I don't have a Capital One card and never have!!!  These scammer are complete idiots, especially since they left this message on my work voicemail.......and I work for a law firm!!  You might want to be a little more selective next time unless you want to end up on one of those "worlds dumbest criminal" lists.  Americans beware......this is probably an outsourced deal (the individual that left me a message was definitely a foreinger) and they just call random #'s until they get someone's voicemail that states their name and that is how they get your name.

You're obviously a scammer to considering the fact that NONE of the numbers you listed are listed on Capital One's website!!

Just got my Capital One and activated last night.  Made my first purchase today, after half hour I got this phone call from this Indian lady.  She wanted to verify my identity, and gave me few really odd question, I answered them, but she claimed that my answers were incorrect.  I told her my answers were correct, then she threatens me that if I don't want my credit scores to get ruined just go to a local capital one branch.  My train my going into tunnel, so the call was disconnected. Got back home, called that number again, another lady picked up, she pulled up my account, saying there was a note on my account and needed to talk with her supervisor, she asked me to hold, after five minutes, I was disconnected.  Called again, another woman picked up, she was not able to find my credit card number  this time, I had to give her my social.  When she pulled up my account, she said there was a note on my account and needed to talk with her supervisor, after about 3 minutes, someone came back to take my call, I think it was the first Indian woman I talked with, probably the supervisor.  She asked me the questions, I answered them and were very confident they were correct, but she insisted that my answers were incorrect, LMAO, and that's how my credit card account was restricted.  

All I can suggest you people out there who has a capital one card and got called from their fraud team, don't bother, verify YOURSELF at the local capital one branches.  I have more than ten credit cards, and capital one is the only one giving me this much trouble, and their representatives were really rude.  If you have to call them, do it in daytime, maybe someone in the state4s will be answering your call.

Look on the capital one website under contact #'s and fraud protection, this # is the second one listed. I agree, I thought it was shady when they asked for my ss and then my security questions, but it's legit. Unless someone somehow cracked the capital one website and wrote a fake secondary # down for fraud protection... I don't think so, rest easy.

I received a call today after placing an order online with Sears. I asked them to verify the order that I just placed and they did. Also, I called the number back and found that it was a legitimate Capital One number. I was leery because the person doing the calling was foreign and was not speaking English very well. I am a call center supervisor, and maybe they should consider a little more training, unless they are outsourcing to another country, in which case, they should ask for the English to be a little more polished. Huge gap in communication!

I recieved a letter in the mail to call 800-239-7054 in reference to a Capital One credit card. The last four numbers of the credit card they mentioned is not mine.
The letter is a cheap zerox copy, not your typical Capital One format and paper.
I see a lot of people reporting this phone number, don't understand why its not traced and the people dealt with directly.

Same situation happened to me as mentioned in the above posts. The phone number is not legit. Think about it, why would a fraud department ask you for your SSN? That's the one thing that we are to never give out.  Don't give these people any information, expecially not your SSN.

I purchased a credit card and was approved received it in the mail all of a sudden I get a call from Capital One saying something about my cousin and asking to speak to him. I was confused at first then it hit me that when they asked me for my application they asked me for references. So I guess they want to call to make sure he is a legit person. Now they are going to call him and he is going to think I got a card in his name.

Looks like this is a legitimate number. Capital One called to ask some security questions, I felt more comfortable to give that information by calling the number on the back of the card instead

This is a big scam and don't fall for it

capital one actually has two numbers for the fraud dept. this might be causing confusion when you talk to reps b/c they might only know about the one.
if u go to the website there's a small link "Fraud prevention"
the next page has options for reporting fraud on different types of accounts "Credit card"
the next page has a bunch of phone numbers, and sure enough this is listed as one for their fraud department.

These Capital One people are really off the wall and annoying.
From all I have read about this number, I don't know if the whole company is legitimate.
They can't tell me, at the number listed on the card or web site, if this number is really a Cap One number and the people at this number are foreign sounding, ask way too much information with NO explanation, and get all bossy and demanding if you refuse.
The SOUND like phishing scammers from the get-go. And they don't get it at all.
You try to protect yourself and it turns out the ones you THINK are there to protect you are the ones who are perpetrating the feeling of NOT being protected at all.

From all the bad feelings and interactions I have read in the last 48 hours, I wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with this company. And I don't.
My son has a Cap One account card. They have sent letters to him AT MY ADDRESS.
He hasn't lived here for MANY years and his account was started at his current address.
He called the number on his card. He was told there is no suspicious activity and no other cards in his name, using his S.S. number, using his or my address, and no trouble with his account.
And for a "Fraud Protection" division of a company sending letters that don't even look like legitimate company letterheads but, a thermal printer or copy machine looking letter is THE mos stupid and inane thing a company in this type of business could do.
Do they save money sending letters like this? Maybe. Is it leaving customers feeling secure? NO !!!

I wouldn't recommend anyone to use Capital One for any reason and this stuff reaffirms my belief.

Just called Capital One from the number on the back of my card and got an English speaking person, who told me the department dealing with my claim (fraud) is closed *called at 845p PST) and told me I can either call back Capital One on the number on the back of my card or directly to the department 800-239-7054. Hesitant to call tomorrow at 5a EST the number but if I do no feel comfortable with the conversation, will just call Capital One with the number on my card and then have them transfer me!

I filled out a capital one application online.  I also have a fraud alert on all three credit companies so I was expecting a call from them to verify.
First they sent a letter that there was a request in my name and wanted proof of identity.  I sent that in and then this number called me 800-239-7054.  It was Cap One fraud dept calling to make sure I filled out the application in which I did and then she said "this is to let you know that your fraud alert is working and you are approved".
I'm glad they called.

Mine was also an American that called so I felt glad about that.  If you have fraud alerts set on your credit reports that's probably why they are calling you.  If you already have a card, they may be calling to verify if transactions are legit.  I had another Cap One card a few years ago and they did call me to verify transactions made in another state.  I happened to be traveling and confirmed them but they will call you if they see suspicious activity.

I just got one of those Capital One letters asking that I call the 800-239-7054 number. It seems suspicious. It is dated from last week and starts with "We have been trying to contact you concerning a possible fraudulent Capital One account that has recently been opened..." Well, if they have been "trying to contact me" they sure haven't been trying very hard. My name is in the telephone directory, and no other person in my city has the same name. The return address on the letterhead is different from the return address on the envelope, and the stationery looks like a cheap photocopy with a fuzzy looking logo. I also subscribe to one of the major credit monitoring services and have heard nothing from them about this.

I checked the Capital One website and I actually did find that phone number on their Fraud Protection page. I will call them tomorrow, but I am very hesitant to give them any of my personal information.
