- Ed| 1 replyWas called and asked to confirm personal information. Told them that I was busy and was not available. I'm researching their number before I call them back but I will not give them any personal information.
It seems strange that they're calling me since such a thing has never happened to me before. I'm not at all comfortable with this.- Caller: Supposedly Target
- SamProviding against id theft, the caller from Target card checked my details on Sunday. It seemed fine with me.
- Caller: Target?
- LauraWhile applying for a joint account credit card with my husband through the mail, I refused to put some of the information on the form. (Doesn't seem safe now a days to send certain things through the mail.) They called today, verified themselves and asked for the needed info. Was on the phone with Cindy for less then a minute. Appears safe to answer.

- R| 2 repliesrcv'd two voicemails in the same day telling me to call this number. if this does have to do with a new credit card, i have never opened one and wouldn't especially when the caller id for these calls are either blocked or unavailable. i wouldn't give them any information and don't plan on calling them back.
- Caller: target?
- Matt| 1 replyIt's legit. Target calling about an credit card application that was suspect. I'm glad they called. Very helpful explaining the fraudulent information used by the criminal. They even told me which Target store the bogus application was made at.

- JAM replies to MattYeah, they gave me the store location where the fraudulent application was made with my SSN. Problem is, they don't have a store there. Main Target switchboard could not verify the number that called me. It smells fishy to me...
- SEB| 2 repliesI received a call today from Target who wanted to talk with my husband about some information he requested. Since he wasn't here, they insisted that he call them back. Sounds like a scam to me.
- SEBThis is a follow-up to the posting I did 5/22. We received another call from the same number later in the day. This number is legit. Someone had applied for credit in my husband's name. We also received a Best Buy credit card in the mail which we had not applied for. Turns out that someone has my husband's social security #, birthdate, address and phone and has applied for a total of 6 instant credit cards in the past 5 days. Target is the only one which turned this thief down for instant credit. There are over $12,000 in charges made which we know about right now. Who knows what else is out there. Target was very helpful in identifying where the fraud happened and the discrepancy in the information that made them suspicious. We have frozen our credit, made a police report and have installed a locking mailbox so to try to prevent the future thefts. Hope this doesn't happen to you.

- sThis number is legit.
It is Target's New Accounts Department.
I applied for a store card Thursday and they called Sunday to verify my details.
The message they leave does sound shady, but I guess they don't want to come across as friendly in case they are dealing with fraudsters.
If you call the main Target Visa number (800-755-5856) they may not know this direct number because they are just given an extension for the New Accounts Department.
If you want to be safe, just call the main number and ask to be transferred.- Caller: Target
- PeebsThe number is completely legitimate. They had left a message on my home phone asking to return the call and it seemed a little fishy to me. When I called back, I got a message stating that they were "Target Financial Services", I was then put through to a person who asked me to verify my name and address, which I gave them (it can be found in the phone book), but then they asked to verify my birthdate and I told her that I was uncomfortable giving that information as I didn't know what the reason for the call was. The woman told me that it was because of suspicious activity on my card, that they flagged. She then named the purchase to me, which turns out was a legitimate purchase made by me. So it seems like it is a general fraud department for Target.

- MoYes this number is good to answer to. They called me letting me know someone was trying to open an account under my name. They had everything correct and They said it didn't go thought since I have an alert on my account. I am checking All 3 credit bearus tomorrow. Thanks to then.
- MatThis number called and left a VM giving a reference number and asking me to call back. When I called them back the agent said it was related to my credit card application, which I had made a week ago. She said the call was to verify my identity and check if the application was genuine. She went through a few multiple-choice questions to verify my identity, similar to the questions asked by credit bureaus when you try to get you credit report. And that was it. It sounded legitimate and even if it wasn't, the information I gave during the call is very unlikely to be useful for malicious purposes anyway.

- JY1023yes it is target calling.
A couple of months ago i received a letter in the mail from Progressive Auto Insurance that someone had accessed our personal information and had been fired from the company. The letter advised to sign up with experian to monitor our credit.
Then today i received an email from Experian stating an "alert" that "Retailers National Bank Target" had made an inquiry into my credit.
then just now I received a phone call from 8003188433 asking me about some new credit card application that was just filed two days ago, using my maiden name, my old address, a completely different driver's license, and some digits in my social security number switched around.
target said they will remove the credit inquiry and they advised me to place a 90-day fraud alert with equifax (888-766-0008 or fraudalerts.equifax.com) and also to notify the FTC (877-438-4338). The fraud alert means that companies have to call me before looking into my credit.
Don't know what happens after 90 days though...- Caller: Target
- JimTarget calling to confirm a Red Card application.
- Caller: Target
- jackieFRAUD. just called the main Target line on their website and they said they are not calling people to verify account information anymore. I gave them my phone number and they said that a card had not been opened or attempted under that phone number. So this is definitely a scam. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR INFO.
- Caller: Target
- JamesYup, target verification...i applied last week. Fast, freindly and needed very little information...its legitimate far as i can tell.
- Caller: target
- Liz replies to Scoth| 2 repliesIt is NOT SAFE... I just called Target through a number they provided on my application. They told me this number IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH TARGET and they were going to alert their security team right away... So be aware of providing any information to these individuals.
- MarcelThey are legit. They contacted me because someone had tried to open a credit card in my name. They were very helpful, providing me with information on things to do and numbers to call to stop any further attempts (alert put on file with credit bureaus), law enforcement agencies etc. They also told me where the attempt had taken place, and provided me with some limited amount of information to help ascertain what info the perpetrators had at their disposal (and also what triggered the alert on their part - fake driver's license)
