Just because no breaches haven't happened doesn't mean they can't. Your whole post is trollish. You don't have to act like a sanctimonious prig and get all high and mighty. Also, where you actually trying to give out the FTC's website? Because that 'link' you gave is NOT their site

Legit. I applied for a REDcard at Target, then they called me the next day from the 1-800-318-8433 number and wanted to verify some info to further process my application. Because I didn't see that phone number anywhere on the application paperwork I received, I went into the Target store and had the store manager call it to verify they were in fact calling from the financial center for Target. The manager on duty called a bunch of different 1-800 numbers that they had at the store to see if they could get some answers - after many times on hold and an hour later (bless that employees heart), the 1-800-318-8433 number was verified that it was in fact Target (and not some shady scammer trying to get my info). After being a victim of ID theft, you never can be too careful - that's why I checked!

Use YOUR head. You never can be too careful. Scammers are sneaky as f&ck and get a lot of public record info on you to verify that it's you...THEN they have you convinced they are who they say they are (since they just told you all of this info about yourself).  Buttttttttt...you never can be TOO careful. I've been a victim of identity theft - it's still haunting me over 8 years later. I hope it never happens to you. Just don't insult people for being too careful - because...you would too. I guarantee it.

this is a legitimate Target number. I recently applied for a Target debit card. it felt funny to me too so I didn't give any information. but when I looked online and called Target after I was transferred to the new accounts department she said yes that's one of our numbers.

After I spoke with the Target person who called, I read this. I was concerned I may or may not have confirmed/denied my information after Target said 2 applications had been filed in the past 24 hours (that weren't me) for a credit card. I went to Target's website and looked up their phone number, called that number and they transferred me to the fraud department. They confirmed that the person I had earlier spoken was indeed a Target employee who flagged and put notes on my file to help me with this. They then gave me the further actions I needed to take to file a complaint with the FTC and put a fraud alert on my equifax and transunion credit bureau accounts. This number is safe!!!

I received 2 calls from Target asking me to call this 800 number and refer to code V81.  When I called, the person told me that someone with my name and SS# had applied online for a credit card.  Most of the other information they confirmed was NOT my correct information.  They referred me to phone numbers to report this issue to the credit bureaus and FTC.  It all sounded very legitimate. The person did not ask me for the correct information, just confirmed, with minimal input (street number, first character of driver's license, etc.), that the information they had been given was not correct.

This is NOT a Target phone number in no way shape or form.  I got this call and voice-mail saying to call this number back.  I have a Target red card, so I called the 1800 number on the back of their card.  They confirmed that this is a phishing scam phone number.  Do not ask for a number to call back to.  Look up their website and get the number there.

Legit Phone number for Target. Thank God they contacted me. I had not applied for an account and they called to verify if I had or not. I found out I am a victim of Identity theft and Target helped me know to contact Experian and Federal Trade Commission to report it. They also informed me of other companies this person had tried to open an account with.

They called and wanted to discuss an account I do not have. My sister works in human resources at Target and they do not have a number like this.

If this number calls and asks for you, check your credit report. I guarantee there will be an inquiry from Target on there.

It's a legit call. I had applied for a Red Card and they called to verify that it was, in fact, me that had applied. If you're concerned about privacy, they have two other ways to verify that doesn't involve giving out personal information.
