I received the same text message as many others and called the number.  It was Synchrony Bank who holds my Old Navy cc card. She told me the card will be closed because of fraud and had me veryify my address to send a new one. Hours later i came to this site and freaked out. I called the company directly and they confirmed that my card is closed and that the text was valid. The lesson is always be doubly sure before panicking.

The lesson should be to NEVER give a stranger any info until you have validated their authenticity by calling an official number you know is theirs.
Scammers put out texts and make calls mimicking as closely as possible to look legitimate and cause a panic to get your info. In this day and age, you need to verify EVERYTHING first.

I got a text around 6AM asking me to verify a Gap Visa charge for $75 at Walgreens. I replied N (no to having made the charge) and was given this number to call.

Text about verifying an Uber purchase then called the number they had 855-224-2952 which is automated asking yes or no. If you don’t respond, it asks you to call this number. Then they called after the text. Did not answer. They are getting good with calling and texting. Scammers.
Do not have a synchrony related CC!

If you don't have those last 4 digits on your card then how could you verify it?  Why would you even bother?

Got a text message asking if a charge on my Walmart mc was legit and to call back at this number. I had already gotten a new card a couple of weeks ago when I suspected fraud from a gas purchase in Missouri as my card was rejected. Don't know how they got the last four numbers of my new card since I haven't had it that long. I did make a couple of eBay purchases through PayPal recently but since everyone else on here is calling this number a scam caller, I assume this text message is as well. They also use another number that they wanted me to call back on 1 (855) 224-2952. If you don't know if these are scam numbers, call the phone number on the back of your card. Of course, when you DO call back, somebody with an India accent answers. Never trust any caller with an accent that sounds like the person is from India.

The legitimate owner of this number is Synchrony Bank.  Amazon Store cards are from this bank. I recently opened an Amazon Store account and received a communication from the bank to confirm the information and this was the number I needed to call.  That does not mean calls and text messages are actually coming from this bank.  As usual, if you do not have any business with the bank, ignore the calls and text messages.

I received a letter in the mail saying my Sam's Club Personbal Credit account has had activity recently.  The letter said to call this number to resolve the matter and to use this one time pass code.  The letter said Synchrony Bank on the top and I had done some things with my Sam's Club account.  The letter just didn't look like something I get from Synchrony bank so I looked up this phone number and found this.  Scam.

Receive two text messages today. I got an official-sounding person robot saying the call was being recorded. The account that they claimed had bad charges on it, has been closed for a long time and they wanted to know if the Amazon charges on it or valid. Since I no longer have the card, they asked for my social security number and that's when I hung up. Never reached a person, it was just the auto-phone. Be cautious with this number.

My husband got a call about fraudulent activity on his Sam’s account. The woman wanted him to take a video of his driver’s license! He told them he would contact Sam’s.

I guess the number ISN'T a scam. I received a text alerting me to potential fraud, and instructed to call this number. I checked my account online instead of calling. There were actually unauthorized charges, and a block on my account. I called the customer service number, shown oline, and they confirmed the attempted unauthorized charges, the legitimacy of 800-420-5598, closed my account and will issue a new card.

Even though it seems like a legit phone number, I felt much better by calling the number on the back of my credit card, just in case....

Received a letter in the mail supposedly from Synchrony Bank stating that there had been some recent activity on my account and wanted to confirm it was me. I've never had this happen before and was very suspicious of the letter. The phone number was 800-420-5598, not even close to any of Synchrony's numbers. Glad I found this site. Saved me lots of time and money.
