That number belongs to the National Grid Collections Services Office. National Grid is the electric company for a large part of New York State.

Some of us, like myself, ARE paying, but their auto dialer is still calling. I've been called three times in the past two days, getting two of those calls AFTER I called to report my payment, to make certain they knew about it. Aren't they supposed to take your number out of the autodialer when they know they've gotten/they're getting the payment?
What are we supposed to do? Pay more than it says on the bill?

BTW - Aren't they supposed to show who's calling through the caller ID? They are a company, after all, right?
My caller ID said "Not Provided" instead. I didn't know it was National Grid until I Googled the number, and came here.

I didn't know who it was, either. The voice message is an automated one that doesn't state the identity of the caller/company. It's very unprofessional, and the only reason I called back was to tell them as much. The person whom I talked to stated that I was delinquent on my account - which I am not, and he quickly discovered after a five second computer search. He was incredibly rude, basically accusing me of not paying my bill, and then when he discovered he was wrong, blamed it on a "technical glitch." I told him it would be nice if he would apologize for treating me like a deadbeat, and was told "I'm just doing my job." No apology. Never had these problems when Niagara Mohawk still ran things, before they were bought out by National Grid.

    Caller ID=800 SERVICE
    Appears to be National Grid

First call this morning: computer said: "hello"....."goodby" & hung up with no message.
2nd call this morning about an hour later: said it had an important message & to give them my
social security number to hear it. I hung up & called National Grid.

They said I owed them money & they would call 3 times per day until it was paid.
The payment HAD, in fact, been made & was the first time in nearly 40 years that a payment was late!
I told them how ridiculous that was, & was told the computer doesn't know the difference & that
the calls would continue until the payment was posted.

This is the way Americans are treated when a foreign company is allowed to own a public service.

Made all payments and yet they still call.  When you state that you even have their on-line confirmation number, the very rude individual on the other end of the line states that they are just doing their job.  Unless I'm mistaken, as a customer, I am their employer and I PAY THEIR SALARY. I have complained to National Grid (on their phone lines that state that the call is being monitored for quality assurance) and the person is even ruder than the original caller.  Must be nice to be perfect.

Ha ha salary no, they get paid by the hour. You are paying the company so they can move on to monopolize the rest of the U.S! I have always had problems with NG. Tell me why does it cost MORE to deliver energy than it is to actually use it! Am I missing something?!?!

Actually, it makes a lot of sense if you really think about it. A power plant basically just burns coal/oil/whatever to boil water and turn a generator. Delivery includes installing and servicing every single electric wire they have in existence to bring that electricity to you. That adds up to a lot of maintenance costs if you consider how many customers are served.

As as side note, I used to work for National Grid's Collections Department. National Grid doesn't actually do their own collections, it's outsourced to an external company; currently with Nationwide Credit, Inc.

All of the outbound collection calls are indeed dialed by a computer, and if the data is incorrect in the dialer, there is no way to stop it. Once again, you have to think about maintanance when it comes to collections-- it's simply impossible for a person to manually look through a database to see if all payments have cleared and the like unless you hire a LOT of people to do it-- I'm sure that you would appreciate having a machine call you erroneously after being late with your payment than have to pay an energy bill that's 200 times higher because they hired 3,000 extra people to scan databases and pick and choose who to call.

Furthermore, working in a call center with people who yell at you because they don't understand how the energy system works or because they haven't paid their bill in 3 months is definitely a little more stressful than most other jobs. Considering the amount of rudeness and lack of general understanding that many people display on here regarding a few phone calls that can easily be blocked by calling your telephone service provider (among other ways), I'm sure that they would be equally, if not as rude, as most of the employees doing the collections.

Furthermore, after working there for quite some time, and doing financial statements with thousands of National Grid customers, it all comes down to this: pay your bill in full, on time. If you can't afford your electricity or natural gas bill, then something is wrong. In today's world, utilities are a necessity. Cut other costs if you want to keep your lights and heat on. It's that simple. If you truly can't afford your utility bill, there are various government and private programs that will help you make the payments. Contact your local Department of Social Services for details, or Google it.

Furthermore, you have rights regarding your utility services that are enumerated by your state's Public Utilities Commission (or equivalent, some states have variants on the name). If you feel that National Grid or any other utility company is giving you more trouble than they're supposed to, Google the number for your respective state's PUC and they'll help you.

I worked for NG, and I paid the bill the first time this # called me last week even though I'm unemployed because now they outsourced me, their money was deducted from my account and the bill is paid up to date but their still calling me. Funny when I worked there I didn't get these calls now all the sudden getting them even after the bill is paid! Good thing for selective call block thank you Time Warner.

    Randy & Jonathan:

I don't live in NY.  Never have.  My utility bills are on auto-pay and are ALWAYS paid on time.

YET, these jerks have started calling my corporate cell phone number, which is based in NJ.  I live in the Midwest.  NG's system is obviously wrong and I don't need to be "understanding" toward the people that work there.  NG should not be hiding behind rude people that expect everyone else to believe they are just "doing their job" when they are harassing people that they have no reason to call.  They'll get no consideration from me if they keep calling.  I'm reporting them to the DNC registry for whatever good that will do.  AND, as someone here mentioned, as a corporate entity, they are required by FEDERAL LAW to display their correct and accurate name in Caller ID.

Don't try to defend these jerks.

I just wanted to comment on what you said you told you... "he was just doing his job"... Since when did it become their job to be rude to customers???  What [***]..  I have been getting phone calls from these people and I am NOT behind in my bill what so ever.  I can not believe that I am even getting phone calls from them.  I can't wait to call them and give them a piece of my mind.  Thanks for all the info on who owns this number.

What you all don't understand is sometimes people use fake numbers that happen to be other peoples real numbers...so that's how people without service get calls. Secondly not everyone there is rude..but it's tiring day in and day out that all you see is people that don't pay, or rely on the government(heap) to pay..something us as workers pay for in our taxes....Also we are NOT outsourced...we're in  the US for a couple states...majorly upstate NY.

Also like someone said, it's impossible to manually go through and remove a name from the system, but the calls stop after 24-48 hours when the system updates itself, and they can only call three times a day...if you paid your bill ignore the call, it's simple. If you didn't pay your bill, and didn't make arrangements then expect a call...its pretty simple.

Besides out of the thousands of financial statements I've done people are just really not putting money where it should go...I cannot tell you how many times I've gotten yelled at because we can't add cable or internet as an expense.

    A) It's not a necessity to live.
    B) You need to pay us, your electric, to even enjoy those things.
Some people really need to work on priorities and not call up screaming when THEY are the ones not paying their bills and utterly "surprised" when they get shut off.

I realize some reps are rude, and I understand...but a lot of us there are not, but we still get blindsided with people screaming and try to help them.

If you don't want calls, remove your number from there list manually by calling collections, looking up your account, and erasing both the primary and secondary number. The calls can't come with no numbers there, and if you never had national grid, simply ask the rep to pull up the account with your number on it, give them your first and last name, and they'll remove the number.

Some of these problems people call in for screaming are almost always easily solved (Leaving SOMEHOW magically owing 4,000+ dollars.) You just need to be calm and LET the rep help you....Christ.
