I received this same 5071C letter today stating they received my Form 1040EZ individual income tax return for 2014. The letter is to help verify my identity. Several issues, no social security number on the letter anywhere, I haven't filed my 2014 taxes, and it would not have been an "individual" or a 1040EZ.  It freaks me out that someone has filed a tax return using my SS#, if that is what this is.  I am on hold with the IRS now.......have not been able to get through on the number on the letter.

You could be the victim of a fraudulent tax return. When a tax return doesn't look legitimate, the IRS will contact taxpayers via letter at the last known address to verify the return is actually yours. You can verify by first contacting the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at the number shown on the IRS website:

Then follow the steps in the letter if legitimate.

Not sure if they are any faster but with the budget cuts Congress forced on the IRS, calls to the main number are taking a lot longer than normal to be answered.

I received a letter today Feb.25 reference #1483911111 from Austin tax stop #6579 in regard to my 2014 form 1040A. I filed a 1040 with my hudbanb Tommy d savants. Add info letter 5071- this letter also has a name Nancy egbert whom I do not know?

This is absolutely the IRS and I have hard proof - the number is on the IRS website.

They list the number there as valid and associated with the IRS. This is the department of the IRS that does identity verification checks.

Got the same letter, called IRS directly and was given this number to call. It is legit, someone was trying to file a return using my information and they had my ss number wrong, but name address, etc correct. IRS flagged it and sent me the letter.

If you go the IRS.gov website and look up the 5071C letter it clearly tells you on the IRS site to call the number or visit the site.  I called IRS directly and was advised it is legitimate.  To ease your mind, get comfortable,be prepared to hold for awhile and call IRS directly.

Now, what about foreign & domestic criminals that spoof (fake) their caller ID & call you? The number may be correct, but not the caller. That is why you should NEVER give out personal, or financial information on a call you did not make. Look the number up. Verify it - then call.

I received the same letter with an * for my SSN. I will calling on Monday to determine the next steps. WILL NOT BE CALLING NUMBER ON THE LETTER. We have not done our taxes yet either
