What can I say---- it's the govt. Ever known a govt run agency or anything to run efficiently and accurately? Forget Enron--------------can you imagine an accountant going over the govt books??????? If they are this sloppy with records, I can only imagine how screwed up the entire govt is.

Yeah, we've seen your copy-paste message several times, Mr. Gov. Employee. You can shut up now. Has it occurred to you that expecting a different result after repeating the same message over and over is a form or mental illness?

As if you guys never make any mistakes in your business processes. Please. I do have a student loans and, the couple of times when I've had to file for temporary deferments, you guys have completely screwed up the process. Given that, I don't doubt you're harassing people that have never taken out a student loan.

I just called them. I had received a call on my cell phone yesterday while teaching a class.
1st thing, they wanted my Social Security Number, which I refused. I did have them look up why they called via my phone number. They claimed to be US Department of EDUCATION on their call yesterday. AFTER INTERROGATING THE OPERATOR,THEY ARE NOT THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, NOR ANYTHING ELSE OFFICIAL,but rather an outside agency which is working with the US DEPT. OF EDUCATION.
SO THEIR COME-ON, WAVING THAT AGENCY'S NAME IS A FRAUD.
They then told me they'd take my number off their mailing list, so yeah, it's telemarketing.

I do not owe direct loans...they sent a card wanting to transfer out of a oregon  state scholarship commision acct I had already paid off not realizing their activities.  I call number on card and they said they would take over because my acct was handled wrong and that the commission was going out of business.  What happened was a quadruple balance on an original loan of 18-20 years paid on of only $8k and a $2k extension of the perkins loan for 15 years paid which never was to be paid on because I never became the teacher in secondary education anyways.  The plus loan of $2k also paid on for 18-20 years.  The two outfits were fraudlent and scams.  Oregon State Justice department couldn"t even recieve the release form of information (third party) when I gave written permission to do so.  The directloans gave up for two years.  Now they do a cbe collection recent and want to attach taxes and deceased husbands soc security.etc.  I truly don't owe for a third time.  They got double my loan amount for what?

If you're getting calls from these people, chances are that you are in default on your student loans and it is highly unlikely that anyone is going to be stealing your identity and doing a whole lot more damage to your credit rating than you've already done.

Have had many, many calls from this number in recent months about my student loans.  i did not respond because I have NEVER TAKEN ANY STUDENT LOANS.  Finally had a free minute to call back today.  After a couple of voice prompts, a nice lady answered by asking for my social security number.  I told her no, of course and then swore at her.  It felt GREAT!  Everyone should do it! It's a free call and we can waste her whole day calling her names....

I was also genuinely concerned having given them my SS #, when I called them I was told that there were no accounts linked to my SS # and that someone else's account was linked with my phone number. They assured me that my SS # and phone # would be removed from their system.

The number is legitimate; the calls were from Direct Loan Servicing Center Collections. I had the Dept of Education verify it.

Yeah, I got a recorded message from them. After checking them up online and seeing that they were legit. I called back, and when they asked for my SSN, I said "I believe that you can look me up with other information."

The guy said ok, and then asked for my name, and DOB, and zip and told me my address.
So you don't need to give them your SSN.

Apparently it was that they didn't have my current address.
The funny thing is that when the guy checked he said that they no longer had my loan, so they didn't need it anyway.

    Oh, well :)

Is this company a governemnt agency? I'm pretty sure it's illegal for anyone but a government agency to ask for SSN# as a form of identification.

It's a legit number. Here's proof from their website. It's the number they list for the following:

    Delinquent Accounts/Collections Department ...... 1-800-848-0981

They could also have the wrong person and just called because you name is similar. They had someone with a similar name and called me instead. The date of birth was different, so they took my number out of their list. I did not give them my SSN, though. Just said I didn't feel comfortable doing that, neither my husband nor I have loans, and we don't know if anyone would've put us as contact. She was able to look up the reasoning we were getting the call by looking up the phone number they were calling. I would never suggest giving SSN. There's no reason anyone should need that. Legitimate companies will have other identifiers.
