- bv replies to bigguy39| 3 repliesok..here's the deal. They are not calling "just to verify info". However, they do need to make sure they are speaking to the right person and ask verification questions.
Furthermore, why would they offer the option to check their number through 1-800-O-canada - (WHICH IS A GOVERNMENT NUMBER) ? The fact that they offer this option tells me it's legit. - beciaThey called me today. Asked for my mother who passed away one year ago. If it was gov they would know she passed since I got death benefits seven month ago.
- annoyedi had this 1-800-931-1026 number call me 3x back to back practically, and at 8pm. now tell me what gov person works that late? i never answer it and there is never any message left. if it is so important for the gov to call, and if they need info, wouldn't they leave a message so that you call them? i think scam for sure. not only that, but they issue the sin, they know it when you file taxes, why can't they look it up without calling?(i can understand if i called them, they would ask to verify it was me) and why would they not ask for the person they need instead of asking you for the sin? i couldn't even change my husbands mailing adress when i changed my own, so i know they would never ask me for his sin. something definately not right

- Darren| 2 repliesI received this call on my company cell phone, I did not answer it in time but when I called it back it stated it was Revenue Canada and to have my SIN number ready. The puzzling thing is my cell phone number is not in my name but through my work. And to top that off I work for the Government of Ontario. So go figure that one. I would be cautious of giving out any personal information.

- SimpsonI got a similar call several years ago from someone claiming to be from Revenue Canada and wanting to verify my SIN and birthdate over the phone.
I don't remember them ever having to do so over the phone. When I said that I would be happy to come down to the local revenue office to provide my particulars and discuss any tax issues, they were adamant they could confirm over the phone.
I simply said "no thanks, I'll just come in" and hung up. When I returned the call, it was not answered. A subsequent number search (not an 800 #) turned up an apartment # on Haro St. in Vancouver, BC. Surrey Taxation would handle British Columbia, and last time I checked they don't call people on the phone and ask them for personal information. - AmandaThis number has shown up on my call display 3 times so far. I don't answer 1-800 calls because they are usually solicitors, but then I've been looking them up online to see if there's a way to put myself onto their do not call list.
I have a gst account, but when they call, they leave a message, so I would seriously question them calling me so many times without leaving a message. I would also question someone asking for my SIN or any other personal information.
I am curious if this is connected somehow to fraudulent bank card activity, as I deal with Royal Bank and recently had to get a new card as the Fraud department had reported my card for being used at a store where fradulent activity had taken place (I have no idea where it was, they won't release that information, but for my protection, I couldn't use my card).
Thanks for the posts and useful information. I will post again if I actually talk to someone and find out anything! - LINDIEI HAVE GOT CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER FOR THE PAST TWO OR SO MONTHS AND THERE IS NEVER ANYONE ON THE LINE. A FEW TIMES I HAVE ANSWERED THE PHONE AND THERE IS NOBODY ON THE LINE. SURELY CANADA GOVERNMENT WOULD LEAVE SOME KIND OF MESSAGE AND A REFERENCE NUMBER. WHO THE HECK ARE THESE PEOPLE.

You are a little too eager to protect thia situation. I wonder why. The fact is, that it is evrey Canadians legal right to request a registered letter stamped specifically by the government, which in turn can be traced back to the government which according to legislature has to be filed in a data base. My fellow Canadians DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR SIN. This is a horrible SCAM. there is no question in my mind that they will be caught and prosecuted accordingly. they have already left a trail, it's only a matter of time.
P/S 1 count of fraud minimum of 2-5 however posing as a government agency a an astronomically longer amd stiffer sentence. they will be caughy and brought to justice - casaneraBeen getting call from this number also haven't answered I do all my tax business by the mail.

- KWThey are the "soft" collection department of the GOC. No worries about them. They verified me and I had them verify what info they had on me. It is all good.
- Call type: Valid
- Renee| 1 replyhere's an update on this number. I just went through a whole afternoon of tracing it. The nutshell version is, canada revenue agency does not immediately recognize this number and have recommended NOT giving information to it but instead reporting this call to a valid revenue agency number.
Here's the long of it. I kept recieving these calls. The first time I received it I answered and got ringing. Confused I hung up. Except that it persisted for the following weeks until today I got fed up with it. So my mom called from a different number and place and the lady on the phone said that it was because I had tax issues but that she (me) could call a different number. First of all, there was no way to indicate that it was me, so how would she know that this was the case? I was still suspicious.
So I did as many of you suggested and called 1-800-OCanada. I explained the situation to her and she did research and said according to her records they were legit numbers but that I should call 1-800-959-8281 because it was a general CRA number and I could talk to an agent there.
As I continued through the rigamarole, it was discovered that there were indeed NO problems with my account, that this number was not recognized in the system, but that the second number one was recognized as CRA and I should call it. So I called it and again, she saw no problems with my account and did not recognize the first number at all.
So she is taking it to her supervisor and they are monitoring their calls for further information or complaints regarding the 1-800-931-1026 number.
So please call CRA (1-800-959-8281) if you continue to get calls from this number because at this point they cannot validate this number!
The CRA number I have given can be found on their website.- Caller: n/a
- strange callsI've been getting many strange calls from Wiggens Adjustments (a collections company located in Vancouver B.C.) regarding a parking lot
ticket. Is there there any conection with the 800-931-1029 number. - rwReceived call this afternoon, didn't pick up, no message left. Very suspicious in that there was no caller id nor message left. SIN should NEVER be given out on the phone to someone unknown. Revenue Canada won't ask for SIN like that, will they?
- Caller: Unknown
- STOPCALLINGME| 3 repliesThis is definitely not Revenue Canada as all Cdn government departments will register as Govt of Canada on the caller id or the government department they are calling from. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR S.I.N. as they are calling you and should already know your information, which proves this is a scam to obtain your id. I have friends and family who work for Rev Canada and they do not randomly call people and ask for your personal information. Also, any government agency should not come up as UNKNOWN NAME on your call display.
DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!! - in ottawa replies to STOPCALLINGME| 2 repliesThat's not true. I work for the federal government and our office numbers show as GOC-GDC in call display -- not Govt of Canada and not the name of the department.
- Karandar| 1 replygoc-gdc 800-931-1026
at least 30 calls from them in the last 3 months- i ignore it.
I just got off the phone with revenue Canada - they would NEVER call more than a few times, and would mail out. They also would NEVER request all of that personal info on the phone...

This is the RCMP's fraud prevention site. a quick register, and then give the details in the email. - Jack C.| 1 replyYes, it is Canada Revenue Agency. However, I have serious issues with the way they do business. I highly recommend ignoring these calls wait for the letter in the mail. Rest assured... if they are calling you at home and requesting you to contact them through this number, it is not about anything good. They probably think you owe them money.
A government agency should know better than to ask for social insurance numbers over the phone. And when I called at approximately 8:30 p.m. (after a brief message about having my SIN ready), the call was answered by a live person on the first ring. Now tell me... what federal government department answers calls on the first ring at 8:30 at night? Would Passport Canada, Canada Post, Elections Canada, Canada Pension Plan, or any other department answer my call in person at 8:30 p.m. if I needed a service? Nope. Funny how "customer centered" the gov't of Canada can be when there's something in it for them.
Knowing that I did, in fact, owe back taxes, against my better judgment I provided my SIN, only to be treated very unprofessionally. The woman was very pushy and acted more like a loan shark than a government employee, which leads me to suspect that these jobs are actually contracted out to collection agents outside the government authorized to act on CRA's behalf. She began by informing me how much money I owed. I told her I was aware of the fact, but that I had just filed a tax return, and the refund would more than cover the amount I owed, and that this would cancel out my debt. She completely ignored this, and proceeded to insist that we arrange a payment schedule.
I repeated what I had just said. There was no need for a payment schedule, as my impending refund would cover my debt in a matter of days or weeks (I had already filed my return at this point). She got annoyed and said, "Listen, Mr. C., it's my job to arrange payment of these back taxes. Your latest return is between you and CRA." Hmmmmm... I thought SHE worked for CRA. Interesting, I thought.
But wouldn't CRA simply take my refund, deduct what I owed, and send me a cheque for the rest? "Yes," she grudginly agreed, they would, "Now let's see about these payment arrangements." I interrupted her again, and I could hear her sigh loudly at the other end. What purpose would it serve to make payment arrangements on a debt that would non-existent long before the first payment was due? "I'm just doing my job, sir," she replied. "If your refund covers the balance, then you just won't have to make any further payments. That's all." Then what was the point in making payment arrangements? It was a waste of her time and mine. She then became very pushy and *informed* me how this would work. She split the amount into two equal payments and made one due the end of the next month, and the second the end of the month after that. So much for us arranging this together.
Then things turned really nasty. She said, "And what bank will you be using to make payment?" "Pardon me?" I asked. "Where do you bank, sir?" she asked, in a rather hectoring, unprofessional tone of voice. "I'd prefer not to say," I responded. She said, "Well, I need this information to make these payment arrangement. Now please tell me where you bank. I need the name of the bank and the local branch." "Why do you need to know this?" I asked. "Because it's my job, sir," was her response. It was clear to me that they were trying to bully me into giving them my banking information to make it easier to go after the money if I didn't make payment as arranged. And to top it off, she wouldn't admit this was what she was doing. She got really ugly about it when I downright refused to give her any banking information.
As expected, my refund came through (minues the back taxes I owed) two weeks later, so the whole conversation was pointless, just as I had told her. Bottom line... don't respond to these phone calls. They are made by unprofessional, pushy people, who are not interested one jot in your interests. If you owe them money, they can be professional about it and send you a letter.- Caller: CRA collections

- SamsonI have been getting calls too....when I called back it says have your soc # ready..what the heck is this..I have had calls from Taxman and they always leave a lenghty message and call back number and come down to there office and so on..this is highly suspicious...some days it calls 5 times a day...not very prof in my opinion.
