http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors
Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- Eugene replies to ScenarioWhy don't you to go to your local district attorney and file criminal harassment charges against them? T
If you documented their calls, you should also be able to recover damages against them up to ten thousand dollars per call.
By the way, they just called me be my Pro Blocker cut them off without me having to pick up the phone. - Unreal call receivedThey claim to be ATG Credit collector of Chicago. They may not be a real company. They are the rudest most illiterate bunch of freaks I have ever received a call from. Actually, numerous rude calls from these people with poor grammar. Don't give them any info.
The security on my computer lists their info as new and unknown. Their so-called website looks like a student listed it.
Again, they may not be a real company. Don't trust them.
They call me and ask me for personal info which I don't give and hang up on me every time! Then they tell me if I don't give my personal info, the calls will continue. Time to put these scammers where they belong. Something is not right.- Caller: Toll Free Call - 800-969-4523

Please read the complaints at the BBB. Make your own decision.
Answered - BBB has not heard back from the consumer as to their satisfaction with the business's response, or the business addressed the issues within the complaint, but the consumer remains dissatisfied. (117 complaints) - See more at: http://www.bbb.org/chicago/business-reviews/c ... h.jovzfW5j.dpuf - charles kirbyhad received a call from this number . started reading comments from people who had the same phone call . calling in the evening hours, not good.
- Tired of unidentified callsThis is Andrew Twyman's company. He is on Facebook wanting it to be known he is running ATG with this public info. He provides it to us.
When his company calls the wrong people, they don't identify themselves. It appears they are above the law.
They have a ton of complaints. A lot of complaints appear to be really settled with satisfaction of ATG.

They just state "toll-free call" on your caller ID for ID information. They have high tech equipment and don't put their name in it to ID themselves.
They are supposed to identify themselves.
They talk on your answer machine telling anyone in hearing distance they are collecting a debt. Babysitter, personal company, business company, clients, etc. They say if you are not "****" "***" don't listen to this. They do this so everyone will listen to your answer machine, and they do!
Everyone in the room sure does listen with that statement. It's intentional.
They keep calling with the intent of harassing. The phone just keeps ringing and ringing if you shut your machine off.

I'm not trying to give legal advice, just giving my view. I'm not a lawyer so my information may be wrong.
There are plenty of legal firms willing to listen to you to see if you have a case. If you search this firm, plenty of legal firms are listed to help.
They appear to be making a lot of errors harassing the wrong people.
Maybe it's time to call one of these lawyers.

- MinnieThis number has called my landline off and on for the last 6mos. They never call more then three days in a role. They just leave a message that is a robot call. Also never given a account number or company that they are representing.And they have never scent me anything in the mail to pay. a legit company that has dept to collect would be sending bills, calling everyday, and account info for you to call back with.

- KevinThe latest in a string of questionable collection agencies trying to collect on an old debt that has been confirmed paid by the original company. They call me on a number I haven't been at in over 15 years.
When I call back and tell them that their client has confirmed the account is paid in full, and that they have advised me not to reply to additional collection attempts, they disappear for a couple of months and then pop up again under a new name and number.
All I can suggest is that if you receive a call from these guys, be very careful. They are obviously working with very outdated lists, and I have to wonder how they obtained them.- Caller: ATG Collection
